From completion of pile-driving, to installation of the deck and the pumphouse\u2019s walls and piping, construction activity includes the arrival of excavators and forms, tons of concrete and miles Ceremony,<\/strong> a time-honored tradition in celebration of GSO\u2019s graduates. The school awards 27 degrees\u201412 Masters of Oceanography, four Masters of Science, four \u201cBlue Master of Business Administration\u201d and seven Doctors of Philosophy.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-150237 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/OTW-Mnth-Jun-e1569438677779.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"88\" height=\"29\"><\/p>\n<p>In recognition of <strong>World Ocean Day,<\/strong> GSO students, faculty and administrators set up and staff an exhibit at Roger Williams Park Zoo to share their ocean knowledge with visitors. <\/p>\n<p>The <strong>miniboat <em>Square Mile<\/em><\/strong>\u2014a hands-on science project built by students in Central Falls, R.I., and launched from R\/V <em>Endeavor<\/em> in October, 2021\u2014is recovered in the Atlantic, near the Azores. <em>Square Mile<\/em> was at sea for 248 days and traveled more than 6,800 nautical miles.<\/p>\n<p>The 2022 Summer Under\u00adgrad\u00aduate Research Fellowships in Oceanography <strong>(SURFO) students<\/strong> arrive to conduct coastal- and ocean-research projects.<\/p>\n<p>Coastal Resources Center and its partners are <strong>awarded a $15 million grant<\/strong> to address the social and ecological drivers of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in the Pacific Islands region. The five-year cooperative agreement, awarded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, will support work with local part\u00adners across six island countries: the Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-150234 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/OTW-Mnth-Jul-e1569438661491.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"83\" height=\"29\"><\/p>\n<p>Exploration Vessel <em>Nautilus<\/em> and scientists with the OECI explore Johnston Atoll. Located in the central Pacific between the Hawaiian Islands, the Line Islands and Kiribati, this atoll is one of the most isolated in the world. Remotely operated vehicles dive along ridge features that are common within the Johnston Atoll Unit of the Pacific Remote Island Marine National Monument.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-150222 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/OTW-Mnth-Aug-e1569438589831.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"90\" height=\"29\"><\/p>\n<p>On successive Mondays, a <strong>lecture series<\/strong> is delivered at South Ferry Church. Her talk \u201cArctic Meltdown: Why It Matters to All of Us,\u201d reviews recent research into the momentous changes occurring in the rapidly melting and warming Arctic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/AGSO_F22_HappsLohmann_300x300-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-178818\" \/>URI leaders, state officials and scientists at R.I.\u2019s Department of Environmental Management announce a five-year grant renewal for the <strong>STEEP<\/strong> (Sources, Transport, Exposure and Effects of Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl Contaminants) program. The $8.1 million grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences extends the work of chief researcher and GSO Professor Rainer Lohmann and his team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRenewed funding of this essential program ensures that we can continue to inform policies that remove PFAS [Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl Contaminants] from our lives while analyzing the potential harm of new chemicals before they are released into the environment,\u201d said URI President Marc Parlange. <\/p>\n<p>R\/V <em>Endeavor<\/em> departs on EN693, the annual <strong>R.I. Teachers at Sea<\/strong> (RITAS) cruise. Along with Associate Dean David Smith as the chief scientist, 12 educators from across R.I. were onboard for the weekend cruise.
