{"id":181346,"date":"2023-06-06T15:19:35","date_gmt":"2023-06-06T19:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/?p=181346"},"modified":"2023-07-10T13:25:56","modified_gmt":"2023-07-10T17:25:56","slug":"gso-student-named-noaa-dr-nancy-foster-scholar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/news\/gso-student-named-noaa-dr-nancy-foster-scholar\/","title":{"rendered":"GSO student named NOAA Dr. Nancy Foster Scholar"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>June 6, 2023<\/h4>\n<p>URI Graduate School of Oceanography Ph.D. student <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/meet\/phillip-yang\/\">Philip Yang<\/a> has been named a <a href=\"https:\/\/fosterscholars.noaa.gov\/\">2023 Dr. Nancy Foster Scholar<\/a> by NOAA\u2019s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The award is named for Dr. Nancy Foster, a marine biologist known for her science-based conservation of coastal aquatic life who served as head of NOAA\u2019s National Ocean Service (NOS) in the late nineties. The scholarship program provides support for master\u2019s and doctoral degrees in oceanography, marine biology and maritime archaeology.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yang works with the Marine Ecology and Technology Lab with his major professor,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/meet\/andrew-davies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Andrew Davies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His research supported by the fellowship will focus on generating a spatial and temporal understanding of how the marine environment drives mesophotic coral and coralline macroalgae distribution in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m grateful to be named a Dr. Nancy Foster Fellow, which will provide four years of funding to understand why marine animals and plants\u2013like corals and macroalgae\u2013live where they do in the Gulf of Mexico,\u201d said Yang. \u201cSpecifically, I\u2019ll work to develop a deeper understanding of how abiotic factors influence benthic mesophotic systems, which is a fundamental component to species ecology, biology, function and response to climate change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philip, from Plattsburgh, N.Y., graduated from Villanova University in 2021 with a B.S. in biology after spending three years in the Changley Lab working on the NSF-funded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wetfeetproject.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WETFEET project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He worked in Rapid City, South Dakota as a biological science technician for the U.S. Forest Service and in the Philippines studying fisheries sustainability on a U.S. Fulbright Research Grant with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crc.uri.edu\/projects_page\/usaid-philippines-fish-right\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USAID Fish Right<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before joining GSO in 2022.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Nancy Foster Scholars can expect support from NOAA throughout their scholarship experience, and the program helps create a pathway to a future career. NOAA staff will mentor and foster collaborative experiences for each scholar in hands-on research, policy and education.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis fellowship is career altering because it allows me to transfer from the masters program to the Ph.D. program with a clear project.
