The purpose of this annual award is to help launch the careers of outstanding investiga\u00adtors in the fields of microbial ecology and evolution in marine or natural freshwater systems, who will advance our understanding through experiments, modeling or theory.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/AA_Leahy.jpg\" alt=\"portrait\" width=\"263\" height=\"313\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-182855\" \/><strong>Annabelle Leahy,<\/strong> M.M.A \u201923, M.S. \u201923, who earned her degrees in May, has traveled to the European Union through the Fulbright Schuman Program to study E.U. affairs and policy at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. She is analyzing the implementation of offshore wind initiatives, marine spatial planning tools, and other European environmental policies to understand how the U.S. might develop the industry in a way that contributes to emissions reductions, coexists with other marine industries, and minimizes harm to ecosystems in coastal communities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/AA_Plankenhorn.jpg\" alt=\"portrait\" width=\"263\" height=\"313\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-182857\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/AA_Plankenhorn.jpg 263w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/AA_Plankenhorn-252x300.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/>Ph.D. student <strong>Bryan Plank\u00adenhorn,<\/strong> a first-generation Indigenous graduate student from the Port Gamble S\u2019Klallam Tribe in Washington, was awarded a fellowship through the NSF Graduate Research Fellowships Program. D. candidate <strong>Katherine Roche<\/strong> received a NASA R.I. Space Grant which is supporting her research of diatoms\u2019 physiological responses to nutrient limitation in the North Atlantic and carbon export pathways. Roche\u2019s work is part of a NASA-led field campaign and multi-institutional collaboration, Export Processes in the Ocean from Remote Sensing (EXPORTS), which aims to better understand carbon export from the upper ocean.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/AA_Yang.jpg\" alt=\"portrait\" width=\"263\" height=\"314\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-182859\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/AA_Yang.jpg 263w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/AA_Yang-251x300.jpg 251w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/>Ph.D. student <strong>Philip Yang<\/strong> was named a 2023 Dr. Nancy Foster Scholar by NOAA\u2019s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. The scholarship program provides support for students working toward master\u2019s and doctoral degrees in oceanography, marine biology and maritime archaeology. Yang\u2019s research is focused on generating a spatial and temporal understanding of how the marine environment drives mesophotic coral and coralline macroalgae distribution in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/AA_Yoder.jpg\" alt=\"portrait\" width=\"263\" height=\"313\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-182860\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/AA_Yoder.jpg 263w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/AA_Yoder-252x300.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/>Professor Emeritus <strong>James A. Yoder,<\/strong> M.S.\u201974, Ph.D.\u201979, was selected co-chair of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medi\u00adcine\u2019s committee for the 2025-2035 Decadal Survey of Ocean Sciences for NSF. The committee is charged with advising NSF\u2019s Division of Ocean Sciences on developing a compelling research and infrastruc\u00adture strategy and accompanying workforce to advance understanding of the ocean\u2019s role in the Earth system and the sustainable blue economy. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/AA_Zhou.jpg\" alt=\"portrait\" width=\"263\" height=\"313\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-182861\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/AA_Zhou.jpg 263w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/AA_Zhou-252x300.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/>Assistant Professor <strong>Mingxi Zhou<\/strong> received a NSF CAREER grant. As an ocean robotics researcher, Zhou develops robotics technology for iceberg studies and has focused his work on the Arctic.
