(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>A Top-Line Look at Key Metrics and Events of GSO&#8217;s Fiscal Year 2023<\/h2>\n<h4>Academics<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_portal-e1704302159546.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" width=\"200\" height=\"188\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-183049\" \/> 34 faculty, 3 marine research scientists and 11 postdoctoral fellows delivered classroom instruction as well as cruise and laboratory experiences to <strong>102 graduate students.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>11 students were enrolled in the online Master of Oceanography program, including the <strong>first six graduates<\/strong> to receive this innovative online professional degree. <\/p>\n<h4>Campus Renewal<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_sunrise-e1704302257234.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" width=\"200\" height=\"144\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-183051\" \/> Rhode Island voters approved a <strong>$100 million bond<\/strong> referendum in November 2022,  providing transformational support for the Narragansett Bay Campus including an Ocean Frontiers Building and new ocean engineering facilities.<\/p>\n<p>In preparation for the arrival of the new regional class research vessel, <em>Narragansett Dawn,<\/em> the <strong>new pier construction<\/strong> was structurally completed in early 2023.<\/p>\n<h4>Public Engagement<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_flags-e1704302328259.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" width=\"150\" height=\"223\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-183044\" \/> GSO met <strong>23,000 people<\/strong> at public events across Rhode Island, including The Ocean Race stopover in Newport, R.I., a spring public lecture series, and the Ocean View K-12 art competition and exhibition. <\/p>\n<p>Students and staff worked with Newport, R.I. 7th graders to <strong>build a miniboat.<\/strong> It was launched from R\/V <em>Endeavor,<\/em> then tracked as it gathered air and sea temperature data.<\/p>\n<h4>Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_oars-e1704302396867.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" width=\"200\" height=\"205\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-183047\" \/> Increased recruitment of a <strong>diverse ocean science student population<\/strong> to 14%\u2014exceeds the national geosciences average of 7% and up from GSO\u2019s historical 2%.<\/p>\n<p>Opened a GSO <strong>Student and Wellness Center<\/strong> where students, faculty and staff can have a safe space for prayers, meditation, mental retreat, or quiet time, with a part-time counselor on site.<\/p>\n<h4>Funded Research<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_sqknot-e1704302461374.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" width=\"200\" height=\"193\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-183050\" \/> GSO was awarded <strong>$71 million<\/strong> in funded research, double the amount received in 2020. <\/p>\n<p>More than <strong>80% of all awards<\/strong> came from the top three project sponsors: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (45.1%), U.S. Agency for International Development (18.9%) and the National Science Foundation (17.3%).<\/p>\n<h4>Extraordinary Projects<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_octopus-e1704302530511.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" width=\"200\" height=\"213\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-183048\" \/> R\/V <em>Endeavor,<\/em> now the oldest-operating research vessel in the UNOLS system, made its <strong>701st cruise<\/strong> in 2023. <\/p>\n<p>GSO professor <strong>Mingxi Zhou <\/strong>was awarded a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program grant for his work to develop robotics technology for Arctic iceberg studies. <\/p>\n<p>In a novel application of satellite data to the coastal resilience challenge of subsidence, Ph.D. student <strong>Pei-Chin Wu,<\/strong> with professors <strong>Matt Wei<\/strong> and <strong>Steve D\u2019Hondt,<\/strong> revealed information that will aid coastal cities in preparing for rising seas.<\/p>\n<p>Since its inception, the <strong>Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institut<\/strong>e has mapped 447,571 square kilometers of the seafloor\u2014roughly the size of California.<\/p>\n<p>GSO professor <strong>Melissa Omand,<\/strong> co-founder of Nereid Biomaterials, received NSF funding to conduct real world tests of scientific instruments made from ocean-degradable plastics. <\/p>\n<h4>Alumni Reach<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_map-e1704302559664.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" width=\"200\" height=\"181\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-183046\" \/> With the addition of 23 graduates in 2023, the GSO alumni body now comprises <strong>1,038 alumni<\/strong> living in 43 U.S. states and 32 countries. <\/p>\n<h4>Charitable Support<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_lifering-e1704302595450.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" width=\"200\" height=\"199\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-183045\" \/> 306 donors <strong>gave $770,000<\/strong>.
