{"id":183226,"date":"2024-01-24T12:45:03","date_gmt":"2024-01-24T17:45:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/?p=183226"},"modified":"2024-01-24T12:47:55","modified_gmt":"2024-01-24T17:47:55","slug":"uri-press-science-outreach-collaborations-for-sustainable-seafood-event-brings-together-members-of-seafood-industry-researchers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/news\/uri-press-science-outreach-collaborations-for-sustainable-seafood-event-brings-together-members-of-seafood-industry-researchers\/","title":{"rendered":"URI PRESS: Science &amp; Outreach Collaborations for Sustainable Seafood event brings together members of seafood industry, researchers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A University effort to fund science-and-outreach projects addressing real-life issues challenging Rhode Island seafood industries drew dozens to a recent event that provided the community the opportunity to engage with <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/cels\/press-initiative\/\">URI PRESS (Partnership for Research Excellence in Sustainable Seafood)<\/a> teams over a celebratory lunch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new program is piloting something exciting,\u201d said PRESS lead Marta Gomez-Chiarri, professor of aquaculture\/fisheries in the URI College of Environmental and Life Sciences (CELS), at the event held at the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/about\/master-plan\/\">URI Narragansett Bay Campus<\/a>, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ci.uri.edu\/\">Coastal Institute<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s seeding and testing science solutions while pairing it with tailored outreach so the community can be as involved as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 60 attendees took in presentations and browsed displays provided by PRESS team members. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/meet\/azure-cygler\/\">Azure Cygler<\/a>, PRESS project manager, a sustainable fisheries and aquaculture specialist of the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/crc\/\">URI Coastal Resources Center (CRC)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.gso.uri.edu\/\">Rhode Island Sea Grant (Sea Grant)<\/a>, said PRESS projects are interdisciplinary and reflect the collective strengths of academia, industry, and extension. \u201cThrough these projects, we have a wealth of expertise and perspectives for solving real-time industry problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183228\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183228\" style=\"width: 364px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-third_column wp-image-183228\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/URIPRESS2-copy-364x238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/URIPRESS2-copy-364x238.jpg 364w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/URIPRESS2-copy-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/URIPRESS2-copy-768x502.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/URIPRESS2-copy-500x327.jpg 500w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/URIPRESS2-copy.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183228\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left to right are: Kassandra Florez, community affairs coordinator for U.S. Sen. A neighboring table featured Hiro Uchida, professor of Environmental and Natural Resource Economics at CELS, who explained a project that incorporates traditional Japanese methods \u2013 ikejime \u2014 into dispatching and preparing fish for sale and consumption. And at another table, several fishermen, including David Bethoney, director of the Commercial Fisheries Research Foundation (CFRF), introduced attendees to \u201cjigging\u201d \u2013 squid harvest equipment that is used world over and is now being tested here.<\/p>\n<p>PRESS proposals are reviewed by an interdisciplinary advisory board and funding is distributed rapidly to respond to urgent issues. The program is managed by CELS with connection to URI GSO, via the CRC, and is administrated by Sea Grant. PRESS is funded by a $1 million, four-year grant secured from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, with U.S. Sen.
