GSO faculty also taught nearly 1,600 undergraduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Campus Renewal<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"144\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_sunrise-e1704302257234.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" class=\"wp-image-183051\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The revitalization of the URI Narragansett Bay Campus continues thanks to nearly <strong>$200 million<\/strong> in investments from the state of Rhode Island, federal funds and philanthropic support. Construction began on the <strong>Ocean Robotics Laboratory.<\/strong> Two additional buildings are in the schematic design phase, and will provide GSO and the College of Engineering\u2019s Department of Ocean Engineering with separate, world-class research and education facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Funded Research<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"193\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_sqknot-e1704302461374.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" class=\"wp-image-183050\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>GSO was awarded <strong>$47.4 million<\/strong> in funded research, representing <strong>33% of all research funding<\/strong> secured by URI, and fueling impactful projects that reach from Narragansett Bay to the Earth\u2019s poles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top five award sponsors were the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration: $25.3M, National Science Foundation: $6.6M, U.S. Agency for International Development: $5.8M, Universities (Subawards to URI): $3.4M, and the Department of Defense: $2.4M.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Extraordinary Projects<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"213\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_octopus-e1704302530511.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" class=\"wp-image-183048\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The NOAA Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute (OECI) was renewed for another five years with a $250 million appropriation.In its first five years, OECI mapped more than <strong>190,000 square miles of seafloor,<\/strong> equivalent to nearly 184 Rhode Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor <strong>Rainer Lohmann<\/strong> and his colleagues found that the Arctic Ocean potentially exports as many PFAS, human-made chemical contaminants, to the North Atlantic Ocean as enters it, circulating the compounds globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor <strong>J.P. Walsh<\/strong> and <strong>Victoria Fulfer,<\/strong> Ph.D. \u201924, found that the top five centimeters of Narragansett Bay\u2019s sea floor accumulated over 1,000 tons of microplastics in just 10 to 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The URI Coastal Resources Center launched a project to support marine conservation in Madagascar with a consortium of partners. This <strong>$13 million USAID initiative<\/strong> is focused on marine conservation, spatial planning, and sustainable livelihoods of the nation\u2019s coastal communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Community<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"205\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_oars-e1704302396867.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" class=\"wp-image-183047\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>GSO continues to make significant progress in justice, equity, diversity and inclusion as well as accessibility. The school has revamped its recruitment and admission procedure to ensure a more equitable and inclusive process free of implicit biases in student application and review, and to reach a more diverse student population. A new <strong>Code of Ethics<\/strong> outlines the expectations and standards of behavior for the GSO community on campus, in the classroom and in the field to foster a sense of engagement, community and belonging.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"181\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_map-e1704302559664.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" class=\"wp-image-183046\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alumni Reach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the addition of 30 graduates in the 2023-24 academic year, the GSO alumni body now numbers <strong>1,067 alumni<\/strong> working and residing in 43 U.S. states and 32 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Public Engagement<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"297\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_flags-e1704302328259.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" class=\"wp-image-183044\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>GSO reached more than <strong>20,000 people<\/strong> in classrooms and at events through its public engagement programming. Highlights include producing an immersive storytelling experience for a global audience of oceanographers at the Ocean Sciences Meeting; hosting the annual Charles and Marie Fish Lecture with speaker Charlie Enright, skipper of The Ocean Race-winning 11th Hour Racing Team; and, at numerous career fairs and STEM events, connecting K-12 and undergraduate students with opportunities in the blue economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Charitable Support<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/IR_lifering-e1704302595450.jpg\" alt=\"line drawing\" class=\"wp-image-183045\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the confidence of more than 240 donors giving more than <strong>$2.3 million<\/strong>, GSO continues to make significant strides in inspiring our next generation of ocean literate citizens, entrepreneurs and leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the coming year\u2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GSO will continue its mission<\/strong> to explore, understand and protect our home planet, its ocean and inhabitants; to support sustainable management of its ecosystems and resources; to inspire and educate future generations of ocean leaders; and to create an inclusive environment for all.<\/p>\n\n\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-panel-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-panel-super  \"><div class=\"cl-panel-super-blur\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/Amo_BeamSigning.jpg)\"><\/div><div class=\"cl-panel-super-content\"><div class=\"cl-panel-super-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/Amo_BeamSigning.jpg\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\"><\/div><div class=\"cl-panel-super-text\"><p>\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Memorable Moment<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>On October 3, 2024, during a beam-signing ceremony for the new Ocean Robotics Laboratory, U.S. representative for R.I.\u2019s 1st congressional district, Gabe Amo, adds his name and best wishes.
