In all, 20,908 cigarette butts were picked up from Rhode Island\u2019s beaches\u2014making up the largest single category of trash items collected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The documentary \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecigarettesurfboard.com\/\">The Cigarette Surfboard<\/a>,\u201d which will make its Rhode Island premiere at URI\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/\">Graduate School of Oceanography<\/a> on <strong>Wednesday, Jan. 28<\/strong> at 6:30 p.m. in Corless Auditorium on the Narragansett Bay Campus, draws attention to this environmental hazard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film screening is free and open to the public, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/film-screening-the-cigarette-surfboard-with-director-qa-tickets-1977958085880\">reservations are required<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"715\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-52.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-192037\" style=\"width:383px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-52.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-52-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-52-768x536.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-52-364x254.jpg 364w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-52-500x349.jpg 500w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-52-1000x698.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Taylor Lane, surrounded by surfboards he designed using cigarette butts that were littered on the beach.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The film is a collaboration between two friends who met through California\u2019s surfing community and had a common interest in environmental issues. Taylor Lane, who has a bachelor\u2019s degree in industrial design, began designing and making surfboards with thousands of littered cigarette butts to inspire surfers to be good stewards of the sea. Filmmaker Ben Judkins documented the surfboard fabrication process and the impact the finished boards have had on making people aware of an ongoing environmental problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEveryone has the capacity to take action in their personal lives and local communities to help protect the ocean and planet,\u201d said Judkins. \u201cIt feels good to stand up for something you believe in. No matter how big or small, our collective actions add up, and our local efforts help catalyze global change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"oembed oembed-youtu-be\" style=\"\" data-url=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/KoMvG-lW4vQ\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Cigarette Surfboard Documentary Trailer\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KoMvG-lW4vQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:39px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KoMvG-lW4vQ\">The documentary<\/a>, which made its debut in May 2024, has won 16 awards at film festivals in the United States and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judkins will attend the screening at URI and will have some of the surfboards from the film with him. Following the screening, Judkins will answer questions from the audience and take part in a panel that will include URI Professor of Oceanography J.P. Walsh and Jacqueline Rosa, an oceanography student at URI. Local surfing and environmental organizations will also be represented at the event.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2026\/01\/Film-Still-19-Hannah-Bennett-surfing-a-Ciggy-Board-in-Fiji-1024x580.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-106262\" style=\"width:365px;height:auto\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The cigarette surfboards don\u2019t just make a striking visual statement about beach litter, they\u2019re also highly functional, as surfer Hannah Bennet showed in Fiji.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Cigarette butts are a source of emerging contaminants, specifically microplastics, which is a focus of Walsh\u2019s research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is concern is about the chemicals that leach from cigarette butts,\u201d said Walsh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An avid surfer, Judkins had a message for Rhode Island\u2019s vibrant surfing community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs surfers, we have an awesome opportunity to be leaders in protecting our coastlines and ocean,\u201d said the film director. \u201cWe witness ocean health issues firsthand, and we can use our collective voices to help protect what we love. Utilizing art, media, and activism can truly spark tangible change for our ocean and planet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Save The Bay organized the International Coastal Cleanup in Rhode Island, which drew 2,971 volunteers. Following the cleanup, the organization <a href=\"https:\/\/savebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025-ICC-Report.Web_.pdf\">published a report<\/a> which included the types of trash picked up as well as how much was collected in each county.
