{"id":193907,"date":"2026-09-02T13:37:21","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T17:37:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/?p=193907"},"modified":"2026-09-03T13:37:54","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T17:37:54","slug":"bay-to-bayou-uri-co-leads-4-million-nsf-grant-to-advance-wetland-restoration-in-rhode-island-and-louisiana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/news\/bay-to-bayou-uri-co-leads-4-million-nsf-grant-to-advance-wetland-restoration-in-rhode-island-and-louisiana\/","title":{"rendered":"Bay to bayou: URI co-leads $4 million NSF grant to advance wetland restoration in Rhode Island and Louisiana"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">September 1, 2026<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The University of Rhode Island recently received a $4 million grant from the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/od\/oia\/updates\/nsf-announces-399m-nsf-epscor-awards-strengthen-research\">National Science Foundation<\/a> to co-lead a collaboration with Louisiana State University to improve coastal wetland management in both states. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/cmb\/meet\/ying-zhang\/\">Ying Zhang<\/a>, professor of cell and molecular biology at URI, is the lead principal investigator (PI) on the project, while <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/meet\/erin-k-peck\/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=23523438677&amp;gbraid=0AAAABCgv8ysUu8s35H7j_brKLKyQ296P3&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwmozTBhAeEiwAkEGZzpRgiRNO4scKGEDK7Ibh7V6N6mP6vHaDu7-2XjUaWU7ethrq0s-pLRoCxmUQAvD_BwE\">Erin Peck<\/a> (URI&#8217;s Graduate School of Oceanography), Julia Wyman (School of Law at Roger Williams University and Rhode Island Sea Grant Legal Program), <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/enre\/meet\/hui-zhou\/\">Hui Zhou<\/a> (URI&#8217;s Department of Environmental and Natural Resource Economics), and <a href=\"https:\/\/nbnerr.org\/research-and-monitoring\/research-monitoring-staff\/\">Kenneth Raposa<\/a> (RI Department of Environmental Management) are co-PIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ecological-Economic Collaboratory for Advancing coastal wetland REstoration and REsilience (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecocarehub.org\/\">EcoCARE<\/a>) project addresses the need for expanded research on coastal wetland restoration in both regions. (URI Photo \/ Anna Gray)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A computational biologist, Zhang, of South Kingstown, brings to the project a background that includes computer science and expertise in microbial diversity and molecular ecology. Although she has led previous NSF grant-funded initiatives, including a CAREER award and an EPSCoR fellowship, she is now leading the multi-institutional EPSCoR project for the first time under the Focused Collaborations Program. She has been meeting with the team since last fall and is looking forward to the work getting underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am excited as a scientist and a resident of Rhode Island to contribute to the health and resilience of our coastal wetlands,\u201d she said. \u201cThis research could set important precedents for coastal wetland socio-ecological systems. As the \u2018Ocean State,\u2019 around 90% of Rhode Island\u2019s residents live within a 20-minute drive of the shoreline. Coastal wetlands play a significant role in flood protection, habitat maintenance, and recreational services. This project will provide new tools for us to better assess their value and provide new insights to help support the protection and restoration of coastal wetlands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rhode Island-based team will also collaborate with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lsu.edu\/blog\/2026\/09\/lsu-uri-award.php\">Xiaochen Zhao and George Xue<\/a> at LSU as their work will tie together research currently happening miles apart in different settings. Their expanded team will develop novel biomarkers for environmental monitoring and work closely with coastal modeling experts, economists, and AI scientists to inform coastal wetland management in both states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project represents the first transdisciplinary team that seeks the convergence of molecular biomonitoring, AI-enhanced geophysical modeling, and experimental economics under a single integrated research framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Coastal management by region<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zhang and her colleagues in Baton Rouge have already noticed some differences in how Rhode Island and Louisiana approach coastal management.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-65-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-193912\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.799805662770925;width:445px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-65-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-65-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-65-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-65-364x455.jpg 364w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-65-500x625.jpg 500w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-65-1000x1250.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-65.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Louisiana\u2019s river-dominated coast has the highest wetland loss rate in the country; a new project seeks to discover how wetland resilience in the Pelican State compares with Rhode Island<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLouisiana takes a top-down strategy to support statewide networks in wetland monitoring and priority assessment,\u201d Zhang said, \u201cwhile Rhode Island takes a bottom-up approach with active initiation from regional reserves, nonprofit organizations, and municipalities. We are interested in understanding how these two strategies may influence the preparedness of coastal states in data collection, strengthening research, and promoting community engagement and translational science.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Rhode Island, Zhang will also work with URI alum Kenneth Raposa \u201993 \u201997 \u201900 at Rhode Island DEM. Raposa is the research coordinator for the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NBNERR) and brings more than two decades of field experience to the project. Prior to his tenure at RI DEM, Raposa received a Ph.D. from URI&#8217;s Graduate School of Oceanography, where his research focused on the effects of salt marsh hydrologic restoration projects.
