Participant selection begins in early March.<\/p>\n<p>We may\u00a0continue to accept applications past the target date, until all 12 positions have been filled.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"b\"><\/a><span style=\"font-size: large\">Eligibility<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/DSC02204crop.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[585]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-102979\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/DSC02204crop-143x300.jpg\" alt=\"DSC02204crop\" width=\"124\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><b>Citizenship.\u00a0<\/b>The SURFO program is limited to U.S. citizens or foreign students who are permanent residents of the U.S. or U.S. possessions.<\/p>\n<p><b>Academic Standing.\u00a0<\/b>All undergraduate students are welcome to apply, but the SURFO program is primarily targeted for students completing their junior year. The SURFO program may also accept talented students completing their sophomore year or seniors who will be graduating after the fall semester.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"c\"><\/a><span style=\"font-size: large\">Selection Criteria<\/span><br \/>\nThe selection of SURFO participants is based upon:<br \/>\n&#8211; academic achievement in the basic sciences, math or engineering<br \/>\n&#8211; possible career interest in oceanography or ocean engineering<br \/>\n&#8211; recommendations from undergraduate professors or research advisors<br \/>\n&#8211; research potential<br \/>\n&#8211; ability to articulate, in writing, reasons for applicant&#8217;s interest in the program.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_104518\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104518\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/blog\/application\/2016-07-08-13-03-42\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-104518\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-104518\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/2016-07-08-13.03.42-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Analyzing zooplankton samples with a video plankton recorder\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/2016-07-08-13.03.42-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/2016-07-08-13.03.42-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/2016-07-08-13.03.42-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-104518\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Analyzing zooplankton samples with a video plankton recorder<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NSF <b>mandates<\/b> that all REU sites in oceanography do not demand a response (acceptance or rejection) from the students before March 15, to give them an opportunity to choose among potential offerings. We try to match students&#8217; interest(s) with advisors&#8217; areas of research by April 1st, juggling acceptance \/ rejection, students \/ advisors. Most applicants are notified of their acceptance into the program by\u00a0April 1st.\u00a0Our goal is to complete the whole process by April 15th.
