{"id":10309,"date":"2022-10-13T14:58:10","date_gmt":"2022-10-13T14:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/harrington.uri.edu\/?p=10309"},"modified":"2023-06-22T11:52:20","modified_gmt":"2023-06-22T15:52:20","slug":"the-harrington-summer-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/news\/2022\/10\/13\/the-harrington-summer-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"The Harrington (Summer) Experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While the summer is often a time to relax, some students from the Harrington School of Communication and Media spent their summers traveling, taking classes and interning for companies.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are many ways that Harrington students get involved and find these opportunities. Some students found opportunities through their professors, while other students found them in Harrington emails and some even made their own opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As we finish the semester, let&#8217;s look back at some Harrington students\u2019 summer highlights.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10516 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Alexander-Pretorius-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Alexander Pretorius, Film\/Media and English \u201823,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> spent nearly three months at Hole in the Wall Gang, a non-profit that aims to give seriously ill children and their families a week of fun. Pretorius described himself as the \u201ceyes of the camp.\u201d While he grew from his experience at camp, Pretorius said that the most important thing to him was making sure the kids had a good time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI like to say it\u2019s the most important thing I\u2019ve ever done,\u201d Pretorius said. \u201cIt sort of shifted my mind to the power of photography. If people want to see what\u2019s happening. That\u2019s me. That\u2019s my job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10525 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Leah-Popovic-1-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\">Leah Popovic, Communication Studies and Writing and Rhetoric \u201824,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> worked as an intern for Beyond Celiac, a non-profit organization dedicated to research and advocacy for celiac disease. As an intern, Popovic took over \u201cCeliac Straight Talk,\u201d the weekly podcast for the organization. According to Popovic, her favorite part of this internship was learning about others\u2019 experiences with celiac and using her platform to tell their stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI definitely stepped out of my comfort zone for this experience,\u201d Popovic said. \u201cIt benefitted my ability to empathize with others and give them justice through my writing and editing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10517 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Cam-Iasimone-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Cam Iasimone, Sports Media \u201824, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">interned with 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston, MA this summer because of his interest in sports broadcasting. His responsibilities included producing the Zolak and Bertrand Podcast and writing articles for the station&#8217;s website. Iasimone was able to experience what goes on behind the scenes to produce and run a radio show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI got to meet some famous athletes such as the Bruins Legend Ray Bourque and be featured on TV from time to time to chime in on the conversation the hosts were having,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10515 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Adam-Bernstein-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Adam Bernstein, Sports Media and Public Relations \u201823, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">worked for Madison Square Garden Entertainment as the people connection summer student associate. He spent the summer making connections and learning about the media industry. He advises students to put themselves out there and introduce themselves to professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou never know how far one connection will take you,\u201d Bernstein said. \u201cI would also say that your best ability is availability. It is important to show your internship that you are willing to learn in all areas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10519 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Zach-Austin-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Zach-Austin-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Zach-Austin-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Zach-Austin-364x364.jpg 364w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Zach-Austin-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Zach-Austin.jpg 707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Zach Austin, Sports Media and Journalism \u201824,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> spent his summer broadcasting for Ocean State Waves in Wakefield, RI. He commentated for games and was a producer for the live stream at home games. Austin said he was excited to have the opportunity to apply the skills he learned in the classroom to a local organization where he could push himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhile broadcasting every night can be stressful and overwhelming at times, the payoff to the work you do is more than worth it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt&#8217;ll help you in your post-college career more than you know, and what better way to gain this experience than being a part of the team?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10518 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Emmett-Munterich-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Emmett-Munterich-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Emmett-Munterich-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Emmett-Munterich-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Emmett-Munterich-364x364.jpg 364w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Emmett-Munterich-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Emmett-Munterich.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Emmett Munterich, Public Relations and English \u201823,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> interned for \u201cIncorrigibles: Bearing Witness to the Incarcerated Girls of NY\u201d an exhibit in Newburgh, NY. The project focused on \u201cfemale juvenile injustice in New York,\u201d particularly the New York State Training School for Girls. Munterich did public outreach and had a press release published in multiple news outlets. As part of this internship, he helped run a workshop where women who were sent to the school spoke about their experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe best part of my time with Incorrigibles was being able to meet the women who were sent to the school when they were young,\u201d Munterich said. \u201cCynthia Boykin, a Newburgh native, became a close friend who always inspired me with her unlimited ambition and radiant personality. I was the workshop scribe for Hilda, who was sent to the institution in the 50s. I wept when writing her life story down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10527 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Juliana-1-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Juliana Lepore, Journalism and Communication Studies \u201824,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> worked as a content specialist for Workplace Options, an international employee wellbeing company. Lepore said her favorite part of the experience was working with a team of people from all around the world, such as Russia, France and Canada. She learned experience with new editing software, created infographics and even got to record her own podcast episode.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWorking for Workplace Options over the summer allowed me to use the skills that I have learned through my classes,\u201d Lepore said. \u201cIt also allowed me to learn a lot of new skills that will be beneficial in my career.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10526 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/MADDIE-1-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Maddie Bataille, Journalism and Spanish \u201823,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> spent a month abroad in Salamanca, Spain with the Spanish Language Program. For Bataille, studying abroad was a way to challenge herself and learn more about the culture surrounding the language.
