{"id":13670,"date":"2024-05-20T14:32:08","date_gmt":"2024-05-20T18:32:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/?p=13670"},"modified":"2024-05-29T08:37:39","modified_gmt":"2024-05-29T12:37:39","slug":"13670","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/news\/2024\/05\/20\/13670\/","title":{"rendered":"Spring 2024 Semester in Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This has been another busy semester at the Harrington School, with many events and opportunities for our students.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13685 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Ruha_event-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"361\" height=\"273\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Ruha Benjamin Lecture<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In February, Ruha Benjamin, the Alexander Stewart 1886 Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University, delivered her talk <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2024\/02\/princeton-scholar-provides-tools-to-analyze-social-impacts-of-technological-advancement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Utopia, Dystopia or\u2026 Ustopia? Reckoning with the Future of Technology &amp; Society&#8221; <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at URI. In the lecture, Benjamin sought to give the audience the tools to analyze the social impacts of technological advancement.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13687 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/WritingV10-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"255\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Diversity in Writing<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On February 27, the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/academics\/writing-b-a\/\">Department of Professional and Public Writing<\/a> hosted a Diversity in Writing Career Panel and Discussion to discuss diversity and writing in the workplace. The event kicked off with a keynote presentation by Dr. Sherri Craig, assistant professor of writing and rhetoric at Virginia Tech. After Craig, a panel of four alums from the program, Naleen Camara, Michael Falaye, Wongo Okon, and Sylvia Vaccaro, shared their career stories and talked about how writing skills can help students get good jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13682 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Career-Fair-27.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"255\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Networking Event and Career Fair<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In March, many Harrington alums visited campus to network with students and share advice on career preparedness. The next day, the annual Harrington Career Fair invited more than a dozen employers from a wide array of industries. Students had the chance to meet and interview for positions with the companies in attendance.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-13741 \" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/DSC_0032.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"362\" height=\"256\">SXSW Trip<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During Spring Break, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/meet\/keith-brown\/\">Professor Keith Brown<\/a>, teaching professor of film\/media, took a group of students to the South by South West (SXSW) Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The group was able to attend a number of film screenings, lectures, and exhibitions during the nine-day event.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13691 alignleft\" style=\"font-style: normal;font-weight: 400;font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/widenetflix.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"263\"><\/p>\n<p><b>NYC Trip<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than 30 students were able to visit Netflix, the Associated Press, and Paramount Studios in New York City. Faculty chaperones <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/artsci\/meet\/kamilah-avant\/\">Kamilah A&#8217;Vant<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/meet\/ashish-chadha\/\">Ashish Chadha<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/meet\/angie-chiang\/\">Angie Chiang<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/meet\/matt-hodler\/\">Matthew Hodler<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/meet\/jueman-mandy-zhang\/\">Mandy Zhang<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/provost\/meet\/daniel-zweifach\/\">Daniel Zweifach<\/a> joined the students. The trip, funded by the Harrington School, gave students the opportunity to network with professionals and learn more about these industries. In the evening, MikeWorldWide hosted a reception for the groups and members of the Harrington School&#8217;s Executive Advisory Council.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-13738 \" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/walkingtour-14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"255\"><\/p>\n<p><b>John Craig Freeman Visiting Artist Event <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With financial support from the Harrington School, the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/academics\/writing-b-a\/\">Department of Professional and Public Writing<\/a> hosted renowned artist John Craig Freeman to share his expertise in emerging technologies such as augmented reality. Freeman hosted a number of events throughout the week, including a public lecture and a hands-on augmented reality workshop.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13688 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/capstone-presentation-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/capstone-presentation-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/capstone-presentation-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/capstone-presentation-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/capstone-presentation-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/capstone-presentation-1-364x243.jpg 364w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/capstone-presentation-1-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/capstone-presentation-1-1000x667.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Harrington Capstone Showcase<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harrington seniors shared their digital portfolios and original research and creative projects at the Capstone Showcase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13737 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/honors-ceremony-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"255\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Honors Ceremony<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the Harrington honors ceremony, more than 200 students received stoles, and seven students received a President&#8217;s Award for Academic Excellence for their extraordinary academic achievements.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13689 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/DSC_0001-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"255\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Film\/Media Production Capstone Screening<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students in the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/academics\/film-media-b-a\/\">Film\/Media<\/a> capstone created 19 films this year. Covering a wide range of genres and styles, students put a great deal of care and effort into these films. A screening of all of these films was held in Edwards Hall at the end of this semester.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-13739 \" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2164\/Viola-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"255\"><\/p>\n<p><b>College of Arts and Sciences Commencement Ceremony<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than 400 Harrington students participated in the College of Arts and Sciences&#8217; graduation ceremony on Sunday, May 19. The University also presented Viola Davis, Deborah Goodrich Royce, and Charles M. &#8220;Chuck&#8221; Royce with honorary degrees.
