{"id":14370,"date":"2025-02-06T09:35:57","date_gmt":"2025-02-06T14:35:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/?p=14370"},"modified":"2025-02-10T13:06:23","modified_gmt":"2025-02-10T18:06:23","slug":"molly-yanity-2023fifa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/news\/2025\/02\/06\/molly-yanity-2023fifa\/","title":{"rendered":"URI professor, Molly Yanity, set to release new book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">KINGSTON, RI \u2013 February 6, 2025\u2014Molly Yanity, professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/academics\/sports-media-and-communication\/\">sports media and communications<\/a> at the Harrington School of Communication and Media, will release <a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Media-Communication-and-the-2023-FIFA-Womens-World-Cup\/Yanity-SarverCoombs\/p\/book\/9781032831091?srsltid=AfmBOoosd4pmLUPrN2-s0FaG2cVSjz_X2-eqZ9cvkvyW_6W8d-fwtdmI\"><em>Media, Communication <\/em><\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Media-Communication-and-the-2023-FIFA-Womens-World-Cup\/Yanity-SarverCoombs\/p\/book\/9781032831091?srsltid=AfmBOoosd4pmLUPrN2-s0FaG2cVSjz_X2-eqZ9cvkvyW_6W8d-fwtdmI\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and the 2023 FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup<\/span><\/em><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on February 26.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-weight: 400\">The book serves as an academic text centering around the 2023 FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup, while analyzing media and communications\u2019 role in women\u2019s sports. Scholars from a dozen different countries contributed research on topics such as the influence of podcasts in women\u2019s sports, sexual empowerment, and harassment in the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe worked with each author and determined the flow, which chapters would fly and which [wouldn\u2019t],\u201d Yanity said. \u201cWe put out a call and lots of people offered chapters and ideas, so the stuff that we knew we wanted to focus on, that&#8217;s how we shaped it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/meet\/molly-yanity\/\">Yanity<\/a> earned a PhD in mass communications from Ohio University in 2013. Before joining the URI faculty, she worked in Seattle as a sports writer for 15 years and taught journalism and sports journalism at Quinnipiac University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-weight: 400\">While teaching at Quinnipiac, Yanity had the opportunity to travel to Australia with 15 students to see the Women\u2019s World Cup in person. Seeing firsthand the impact of experiencing an international sporting event had on students who had never traveled out of the country, let alone witnessed such a sporting event in person, inspired Yanity to bring more personal aspects into her book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn my lifetime, it really went from not seeing much media coverage at all to where we are today, where it&#8217;s pretty commonplace and celebrated. I think that, while we&#8217;re at this point, there&#8217;s an opportunity to do things in a better way. \u2029We don&#8217;t just have to emulate what men&#8217;s sports do, right? There are more equitable and fair ways to do things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-weight: 400\">Yanity\u2019s interest in the field of women\u2019s sports not only stems from growing up involved in sports, but recognizing the importance of representation and equal opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think it is so important for women, particularly women of color and trans women, to have space to succeed,\u201d Yanity said. \u201c\u2029When I say succeed, I don&#8217;t just mean, \u2018we can all make a hundred million dollars.\u2019 I mean so that we can succeed in living sustainably and living good lives and productive lives.
