After graduating with a B.A. in 1967 he served a full tour of duty in Vietnam. He is the author of <em>Strength in What Remains<\/em>, <em>My Detachment<\/em>, <em>Home Town<\/em>, <em>Old Friends<\/em>, <em>Among Schoolchildren<\/em>, <em>House<\/em>, and <em>The Soul of a New Machine<\/em>. He has won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the Robert F. Kennedy Award, and many other literary prizes. His enormously influential book <em>Mountains Beyond Mountains<\/em> (2003) captures two global health crises-tuberculosis and AIDS through the eyes of a single-minded physician bent on improving the health of some of the poorest people on the planet.
