Dr. Leonard is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo, where her research focuses on Indigenous water justice and its climatic, territorial, and governance underpinnings. Dr. Leonard seeks to establish Indigenous traditions of water conservation as the foundation for international water policymaking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She represents the Shinnecock Indian Nation on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.midatlanticocean.org\/ocean-planning\/mid-atlantic-committee-on-the-ocean\/\">Mid-Atlantic Committee on the Ocean<\/a>, which is charged with protecting America&#8217;s ocean ecosystems and coastlines. She also serves as a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ijc.org\/en\/wqb\">Great Lakes Water Quality Board<\/a> of the International Joint Commission. Her regional ocean policy work in collaboration with Tribes, state, federal and fishery management council entities received a <a href=\"http:\/\/peterbenchleyoceanawards.org\/\">Peter Benchley Ocean Award<\/a> for Excellence in Solutions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-e22b9fd38ba429ba0f81\" class=\"sqs-block quote-block sqs-block-quote null\" data-block-type=\"31\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<figure class=\"block-animation-none\">\n<blockquote data-animation-role=\"quote\"><p>&#8220;If we\u2019re going to make innovative changes for water governance, it has to come from an interdisciplinary approach. We can\u2019t solve these issues in isolation.&#8221; \u2014 Dr. Kelsey Leonard, Shinnecock Nation<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_4_1475446993886_13068\" class=\"sqs-block html-block sqs-block-html\" data-block-type=\"2\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<p class=\"\">Dr. Leonard received an A.B. in Sociology and Anthropology with honors from Harvard University, a MSc in Water Science, Policy and Management from the University of Oxford, a JD from Duquesne University, and PhD in Political Science from McMaster University. She has been recognized as a <a href=\"https:\/\/naaee.org\/our-work\/programs\/ee-30-under-30\">30 under 30<\/a> world environmental leader by the North American Association for Environmental Education and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaied.org\/40-under-40\">\u201cNative American 40 Under 40\u201d<\/a> award recipient by the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development. Her doctoral dissertation examined Indigenous water governance in the Great Lakes. For her research, she was also awarded one of the most prestigious postdoctoral awards in Canada, the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/banting.fellowships-bourses.gc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Dr. Leonard has been instrumental in safeguarding the interests of Indigenous Nations for environmental planning and builds Indigenous science and knowledge into new solutions for water governance and sustainable oceans. In collaboration with a global team of water law scholars Dr. Leonard has published in <em>Lewis and Clark Law Review<\/em> on <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3013470\">Indigenous Water Justice<\/a> and the defining international legal principle of self-determination under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Her recent scholarship explores legal personhood for water and her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/kelsey_leonard_why_lakes_and_rivers_should_have_the_same_rights_as_humans?language\">TEDTalk \u201cWhy lakes and rivers should have the same rights as humans\u201d<\/a> has nearly 3 million views.
