Many congrats to Joan Sanchis and Andzelika Cetera for presenting their work at the CHS Research Night on April 6th 2026! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joan, international student from Spain, presenting preliminary results of evaluation of cardiopulmonary fitness in young adults born pre-term with and without a neonatal condition (paper in writing, updates coming soon!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andzelika presented the study design for her Master special project. She will focus on validating a NIRS-based protocol to estimate muscle oxygen diffusion rate on patients with COPD. See below the flyer for enrolling in the study if meeting criteria!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Dr. Adami presenting her work on clinical and behavioral associated to muscle oxidative capacity in smokers with and without COPD, at the Brown A-CTR Idea Conference on April 7th 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Many congrats to Meghan Kalashian for graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Many congratulations to Meghan<\/strong> Kalashian, who obtained her Bachelor in Science (major in Kinesiology) in December 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meghan spent two semesters at HIPlab, deepen her knowledge in exercise physiology and pulmonary diseases. She contributed to advance several projects active in the lab; in particular, she lead data organization, and run preliminary statistical analysis for a study looking at whole-body performance testing on pre-term population. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best of luck to Meghan that know is applying to OT graduate school!! You got this!!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

NEW STUDY COMING UP FALL 2025!!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In presence of chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), the ability to move oxygen (O2<\/sub>) from the atmosphere into the human body down to the mitochondria (i.e., small organelles functioning as batteries producing energy to power the body\u2019s cells) is impaired at multiple levels, limiting a person ability to work, exercise, and the overall quality-of-life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the peripheral muscle level, the changes to this capacity, called diffusion, have not yet been well described in COPD, because previous studies used either invasive or sophisticated methods that limited the results to small group of patients that not accurately represent the COPD population. At the URI Human Integrative Physiology Lab we developed a novel, noninvasive methodology that uses infrared light to assess muscle O2<\/sub>diffusion capacity. This proposal aims to validate and assess the reproducibility in a group of COPD across the four severity stages of this disease.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Adami<\/strong> teamed up with experts in the field of exercise physiology and skeletal muscle and was invited to talk about Skeletal muscle oxidative capacity in health and disease<\/em>, one of the four talks for the ACSM Highlighted Symposium on \u2018Oxygen at the Final Frontier: Advances in the Assessment of Aerobic Function in Health and Disease\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The symposiums took place on June 2025, at the 2025 American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA, USA<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In May 2025, Dr. Adami<\/strong> participated as faculty at the American Thoracic Society (ATS) New Faculty Boot Camp<\/strong> (NFBC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was part of a small group of PhD scientists that mentored the new generation of postdocs and young faculties that are pursuing a career in academia, with a research focus on chronic lung diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this two days bootcamp, they discussed topics like ‘Negotiating -the first contract- for success’, ‘CV tips and tricks’, ‘Leading a research team’. It was a very enriching experience for students and mentors. Last April 30, 2025, our PhD student, Shayan Khodabakhsh<\/strong>, presented preliminary data of his ancillary study titled “Cardiopulmonary Responses to Incremental Exercise Testing in Young Adults with a History of Preterm Birth are Similar to Normal Gestational Age Peers: a Preliminary Analysis” at the URI’s International Graduate Student Showcase<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shayan’s study is part of a larger, NIH-funded R01, project called RHODE Study (https:\/\/www.rhodestudy.com<\/a>), which is a collaboration between our lab and that of Dr. D’Agata (PI, ass\/prof of Nursing, URI). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
