These educational experiences may be embedded in courses (i.e., curricular) or as a result of other forms of involvement at URI related to your academic interests (i.e., co-curricular). <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-card-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-card  \" href=\"https:\/\/riag.ri.gov\/about-our-office\/divisions-and-units\/bureau-criminal-identification-bci\" title=\"\"><div class=\"cl-card-container text\"><div class=\"cl-card-text\"><h2>BCI Checks<\/h2><p>Students may be required to have a Background Criminal Investigation checks (BCIs). You will not be allowed to begin <s>your <\/s>experiential education activities without a current valid BCI check. There you shadow professionals and gain applied knowledge through direct experience. This course also serves as your capstone course, integrating theory and practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How to <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSegnGBvUa4jDCH_Ztpio3Brfkp7TvLmE8LVVZOs0ChAhRmoZg\/viewform\">register for your senior field internship<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please note that all HDF majors are required to complete HDF 480\/481. In extenuating circumstances, ITR 302\/304 will be substituted for HDF480\/481 and will not count as a D1 requirement. Please email the HDF Department Chair at <a href=\"mailto:skyeleedahl@uri.edu\">skyeleedahl@uri.edu<\/a> for the waiver application.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional Course-Related Opportunities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many HDF courses offer students opportunities to develop knowledge and skills through class activities such as site visits, observations, interviews, engagement with guest speakers, event participation, and project work assignments. For example, in HDF 434: Children &amp; Families in Poverty, students may organize food drives or serve in a local shelter for people experiencing homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Independent Study credits may be an option for students who work with faculty in their research labs or provide instructional support as undergraduate Teaching Assistants (TAs). See HDF 495-498 for these experiential education possibilities. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2024\/05\/commencement-2024-challenging-past-fuels-human-development-grads-drive-to-help-people-who-remind-me-of-me\/\">Dr, Sammy Ahmed mentored undergraduate Alexandra Kenyon (BS, \u201924) in research<\/a> on executive functioning and cognitive development of children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Co-Curricular Opportunities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students can join the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chs\/student-resources\/student-involvement\/\">HDF Club,<\/a> a URI student organization.
