Outcome management involves routinely collecting client feedback about progress and the therapeutic relationship and using that feedback to guide therapy toward the best possible outcome.

Students use Better Outcomes Now (BON) to record and track client responses to treatment. BON provides information about client progress and the therapeutic relationship and can help identify when a client may not be progressing as expected. Students use this information with their supervisors to make decisions about the clinical process and adjust treatment when needed.

Using client feedback throughout therapy helps students develop their clinical skills while learning to continually evaluate whether treatment is meeting clients’ needs.

Our model incorporates four core values:

Collaboration

A collaborative model informs all aspects of supervision and therapy. Students learn to work with clients and families in ways that recognize and build on their unique strengths and resources. Students are also expected to collaborate with and support their colleagues. Supervision draws on trainee strengths and uses client feedback to support a collaborative, strengths-based approach to therapy.

Integration

Students are exposed to a variety of couple and family therapy theories and models and are encouraged to develop an approach that fits their clinical perspective and the needs of their clients. Outcome management provides an additional tool for evaluating whether an approach is helping clients and when a different approach may be needed.

Diversity

Our program values diversity in our students, clients, and curriculum. Students learn to consider how cultural and societal factors shape clients’ experiences and the therapeutic process. Using client feedback helps students put what they learn about diversity into practice and remain open to perspectives and experiences that may differ from their own.

Practice-Based Research

Our on-site clinic provides opportunities for students to connect research and clinical practice. Students routinely collect and review client feedback throughout treatment, including information about progress and client satisfaction. This data helps students and faculty evaluate clinical services and better understand what is working for the clients and families we serve.

Training Model Our training model is based on an outcome management (OM) protocol.
