Rich Allberry<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I am a senior majoring in English. As a returning student, I started my degree for the sake of professional advancement: the technical writing field I wanted to move into required a\u00a0BA in English. To become a better job candidate is a great reason to pursue an English degree, but it is no longer my only reason. The faculty at URI has shown me more: to become a closer reader, a clearer thinker, and a more attentive listener. These skills are marketable, sure, but they\u2019re also worth pursuing for their own sake. I hope to teach literature to help others benefit from its study\u2014professionally and personally\u2014as I have.<\/p>\n

Devon Andrews\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m a Junior majoring in Philosophy and Writing and Rhetoric with a particular interest in Existentialism, and the communication of philosophical thought through creative literature. I’m also an avid pool player with a love of vinyl records. The draw of philosophy for me came from they way in which my entire world view can be changed by certain ideas and philosophical systems. I intend to\u00a0expand my knowledge of various philosophical ideas\u00a0to eventually formulate and produce\u00a0creative works which carry my own ideas as\u00a0a part of their themes.<\/p>\n

Olivia Chaves<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I am a Senior at the University of Rhode Island. I am an English and Secondary Education major. I hope to become a local English middle school or high school teacher and give back to my community once I graduate. I have always been an avid reader and writer and a true supporter of the arts and Humanities.The Humanities are such an integral part of our society and culture and I think a wonderful field of study.\u00a0In my free time I love to spend time with family and friends, do yoga, play the guitar, and watch movies and films. Tyler Donley<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m currently a Senior living in Newport, Rhode Island studying Film and Media at the University of Rhode Island. I must admit, it\u2019s a great field and I love it. When I first began my studies at URI I was an engineer. In high school I was always very good at math and science. I\u2019ve always been an incredibly logical and motivated person. Sounds like I\u2019d fit the engineer stereotype, right? Wrong. I just wasn\u2019t happy with what I was doing, so I switch my major to film \u2013 a topic I\u2019ve been passionate about my entire life!Since becoming a film major, I have completely immersed myself into the program at URI. I\u2019m a Freshman double majoring in History and Philosophy and pursuing a minor in Labor Studies. After graduating, I intend to\u00a0go to law school, focusing on the arena of public policy.\u00a0 I am currently Clerking for the State Senate\u2019s Ethics Commission and Interning with the RI National Organization of Women legislation action committee. Because of my background and experiences within the Humanities, I feel confident that I will be able to establish a strong career in law and advocacy. The Humanities have given me the confidence and training to take on a broad amount of opportunities. I know that no matter what, I can fall back on the researching and analytic skills I have gained through the study of History and Philosophy.<\/p>\n

Katie Owens<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I am a Junior at URI and I am double majoring in Italian and Philosophy. My focus right now is on my education, my future, and how I can make the most of what I have learned at URI. After graduation, I want to continue on to graduate school for something along the lines of grant writing, policy writing or philosophy. I want to apply what I have learned studying philosophy onto real problems facing the world today, such as global poverty and malnutrition. My majors help me learn valuable skills that I can transfer from school into the workplace, while teaching me about myself and the world.<\/p>\n

I am a Freshman double-majoring in History and Secondary Education, because I am very interested in social justice and youth being educated on the world issues. I am a camp-counselor at my former high school,\u00a0Mount Saint Charles Academy’s Fine Arts Camp. I love being a camp counselor because the kids are so excited to learn new things that I want to learn with them. History is my focus of studies because I like to see how we got to where we are today. The social justice issues and cultural influences interest me the most about History. I hope I can go back to my high school with my degree and teach. I have had trouble in school since I started and I really want to help kids who struggle as well.<\/p>\n

I am a third year PhD student in English, specializing in the British modernist novel, the politics of form, and affect studies. I’m writing her dissertation on charm as both critique and pointed aesthetic circulating among female modernists. The Humanities allows just such a discussion to occur – an everyday term, “charming” can be unpacked to reveal a host of political, social, and cultural assumptions. I’m passionate about the Humanities as a vital discipline, and happy to be serving on the Advisory Board!<\/p>\n
