{"id":10575,"date":"2022-12-05T22:40:54","date_gmt":"2022-12-05T22:40:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/humanities\/?p=10575"},"modified":"2022-12-05T23:30:33","modified_gmt":"2022-12-05T23:30:33","slug":"postproduction-for-fragmentary-discourse-on-nothingness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/humanities\/postproduction-for-fragmentary-discourse-on-nothingness\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Postproduction for Fragmentary Discourse on Nothingness&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Fragmentary Discourse on Nothingness<\/em>&nbsp;is a 16mm Bengali language essay film.&nbsp;It is&nbsp;a philosophical exploration of the Buddhist philosophy of \u201cnothingness\u201d (<em>shunyata<\/em>). Nothingness is defined in Buddhist philosophy as the difference between the way things \u201cappear to be\u201d in contrast to the way they \u201cactually are.\u201d It means that&nbsp;all phenomena including the self are void of inherent existence; that they exist only by imputation and appear only in dependence on other phenomena. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/humanities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1655\/2-Untitled-1024x612.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10579\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The film was shot in&nbsp;Mahatma Gandhi\u2019s last commune (<em>ashram<\/em>) in the village of Sewagram in central India where he lived from 1936 to his death in 1948; the three-thousand-year-old Hindu pilgrimage city of Banaras; working class factories of Calcutta and, in the 4<sup>th<\/sup>-8<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century CE Buddhist archaeological sites of Ajanta and Ellora in western India. It also incorporates&nbsp;rare home-movies and lost newsreels from India which were discarded in the flea markets of Bombay.
