{"id":226,"date":"2025-08-18T06:05:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T10:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/iacr\/?p=226"},"modified":"2025-08-18T06:06:49","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T10:06:49","slug":"major-unity-upgrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/iacr\/major-unity-upgrade\/","title":{"rendered":"Major Unity Upgrade!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We have just completed a major expansion to the <a href=\"https:\/\/unity.uri.edu\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/unity.uri.edu\">URI portion of Unity<\/a>. This was funded via a federal grant that we were fortunate enough to receive. Here are the details of the hardware expansion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>12 Intel Xeon CPU nodes with 64 x86-cores each and 256GB memory each.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6 Nvidia \u201cGrace\u201d CPU nodes with 144 ARM-cores (!) each and 512GB memory each in a new \u201c<strong>arm<\/strong>\u201d partition.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An additional Nvidia Grace-Hopper GH200 GPU node to add to the 3 available already in Unity.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With this expansion,&nbsp;<strong>we have added 1,600+ CPU cores<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 this could not have come at a better time since we have been seeing heavy demand on those resources for several weeks. Hopefully, this expansion will help ease the pressure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An important note:<\/strong>&nbsp;You may have noted that we have just made a deep investment in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/data-center\/grace-cpu\/\">Nvidia\u2019s Grace and Grace-Hopper architecture<\/a>. This is a forward-looking investment \u2014 NSF\u2019s next-generation ACCESS supercomputing systems (for example, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/news\/nsf-announces-groundbreaking-computing-facility\"><em>Horizon<\/em><\/a>\u201d) will be using this Nvidia architecture exclusively because of its exceptionally high power efficiency. Note that these are&nbsp;<em>not<\/em>&nbsp;standard x86 nodes; they are based on ARM architecture and software will require, at least, a&nbsp;<em>recompile<\/em>&nbsp;to execute properly on these nodes.
