Between the beaches, the bay, the bike paths, and the amazing weather, there is no better place to be from May through August. But if you’re staying in Kingston for work, summer classes, or just because its home for now, it can be easy to let the season slip by without actually doing anything with it. I know because I’ve done it, spent weeks telling myself I’d get outside tomorrow, then woke up one day in August wondering where the summer went

What changed things for me was treating Campus Rec as my starting point instead of just a place to work out. It sounds simple, but there’s something about having a home base that makes everything else easier. For some it could be going to the Anna Fasctelli & Wellness Center. During the school year, the group fitness classes became a huge part of my routine. It was a great way to meet up with friends while staying active. These classes that you can sign up for through IMLeagues became an activity I looked for, not because I’m the kind of person who loves structured workout, but because having something on my calendar meant I actually left the house. Once I was out, it was easy to keep going.

That’s the thing about Rhode Island in the summer, the hardest part is just getting started. Finding what you’re interested in is the stepping ground to having a great summer. Getting in the water is one of my favorite activities in the summer. The Narragansett Town Beach has huge waves that make splashing around super fun. However, for those looking for a more relaxed way to enjoy the water the Tootell Aquatic Center is the perfect place to do laps. Center a few times a week, mostly just to have something to do in the morning while also starting the day off on a strong note. After dipping in the water in the morning, it made me feel refreshed and ready for the day

The Sailing Center is also a great place to get on the water. I’d driven past it a hundred times and never thought it was for me, it seemed like it was something that required experiences I didn’t have. That was until I took a sailing class last semester, and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. There is nothing quite like being out on the Narragansett Bay on a nice summer day. URI Campus Rec came to me on the boat, Rhode Island’s summer did the rest.

When I’m not on the water, the bike path is a great location to be. Some days it was a leisure walk to clear my mind, other days it was a way to catch up with my friends while still staying active. What I started to notice was that I would see familiar faces doing the same activities as me. URI Campus Rec has a way of connecting you to people without making it feel forced, you just keep running into the same faces until they stop being strangers.

Summer doesn’t have to be extraordinary to be memorable. Small routines often become the moments you remember most. Campus Rec can be the place that helps you make the most of your time before fall returns. .

By: Megha Sud

Rhode Island summers are the best part of the year, take it from someone who has lived here their whole life.
