As cliche as it sounds, the best way to relieve these concerns was to put myself out there and get myself involved on campus.

Amidst the stress of starting at a new school, I made sure to make time to take long walks, as it always has been a stress reliever for me. Little did I know that aimlessly walking along the bike path would turn into meeting some of my best friends at college. One of which I met in the most hectic of times: dragging all of our heavy bags up three flights of stairs into our shared suite in Coddington. Move in day is always stressful and slightly dramatic, but I mustered up the courage to ask her if she wanted to take a walk and chat after we got all settled in. To this day, it was probably the best decision I’ve made at URI. Not only did my suitemate and I have so much in common and clicked immediately, it also made me more excited to ask others to do the same until I gradually grew more comfortable in my place at school.

At the time I didn’t realize that the bike path was part of something bigger than just being a place to walk – it ended up being my gateway into campus recreation. I’ve been really obsessed with the gym, yoga classes, etc. There are so many activities that you’re bound to find something you like doing.

The bike path became my go-to spot for a range of reasons. It is definitely ideal to go when the days are warm and sunny, but you can make it a fun activity at any time of year if you’re committed to wearing excessive layers.

Last fall, one of my best friends and I decided to brave the freezing cold, layer up, and take a long walk to disconnect from the seemingly endless assignments during midterm season. We brought hot chocolate with us in thermoses to go along with our extreme bundling, and in the end we practically forgot that, with the wind chill, it felt like 17 degrees.

One of the best things about the bike path is that there are so many ways to utilize it; you can walk, you can run, you can (of course) bike, you can rollerblade. I’ve even seen people lunging and doing various exercises in small groups. Not to mention that you’re so close to nature, and the animals you get to see at the beginning and end.

The best advice I was given from the start was to take part in events on campus – and activities via campus recreation are the perfect place to start because you never know who will become your lifelong friend.

By: Hannah Wainman

Major: Political Science

Graduating by: 2027

When I transferred to URI my sophomore year, my biggest source of concern was how I was going to get acclimated and make friends in a university that had so many students.
