The chair is located in the Wellness Resource Center of the Anna Fascitelli Fitness and Wellness Center and is free to use after signing up through IMLeagues. Reservations open up at 12 p.m. the day before attending, with one slot available per session. The massage chair is open 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. with twenty-minute sessions that leave 10 minutes until the next reservation. The massage chair is listed on IM Leagues with the description “Experience next-level relaxation with our 4D Massage Chair.” I was lucky enough to test the chair for this blog, and I can confirm it is next-level.

Recovery and relaxation are priorities of being a student, especially students who experience intense workouts. The wellness wheel includes aspects such as social and physical which happen every day at the gym when people come with friends and take workout classes or support one another. Mindfulness practices complement these activities by giving the body a time and place to recover.

The session started with a tutorial from Denise Robbin, the Coordinator of Fitness for Campus Recreation. Denise provided some quotes she heard from students trying out the chair: “It is the only place I feel good about sitting and doing nothing,” and “It helps me recover from my workout.”

Powered on, the chair gave two pages of options to choose from, ranging from neck to full body, and meditation. I chose the full body so I wouldn’t miss out on any details. The chair has one rule, and that is no shoes, but wear your socks. With slots for your legs and arms, the chair comforts the body with pressure and pinpoints all areas of the body. It also scans your body before starting up the massage. With a thorough back massage that targets glutes and shoulders, the chair is perfect for a post-workout wind-down.

Right outside the meditation room, people are engaging in various workout routines and workout classes. Little do they know, any discomfort after a gym session can be soothed before they leave the building. Reservations for the massage chairs started at the beginning of the semester after installation over the summer and are here to stay.

During my twenty minutes in the massage chair, I realized what I liked and didn’t like. I have had shoulder and upper back pain for as long as I can remember due to stress, and I used to see a chiropractor. The rolling and kneading effect was relieving to those areas. As someone who hates getting their blood pressure taken, I did not like the squeezing of my legs, while the arms were bearable. These are all options to remove or add at the beginning of the session when you are asked to choose how you would like your massage on the screen.

One of the features was tilting back, and my legs were at a 90°, and another was a pulsing chop to your back. This feature was like being in the mall as a little kid and trying out those massage chairs. My legs and the bottoms of my feet had a rotating massage while they were in the leg slots, that was one of the gentler features that I enjoyed.

This fall, winter, and spring, whether you’re a person who lifts weights or takes our Pilates and yoga classes, the massage chair is definitely something to check out at Anna Fascitelli Fitness and Wellness Center. I went in between classes, and it was just as nice as it would be post-workout. Practicing wellness and mindfulness can be comforting and is just as important for the body.
