UMass Twilight meeting and update 6/2/21

Fruit twilight meeting, TUESDAY, June 8, 2021, 5:30 PM, Honey Pot Hill Orchards, 16 Boon Hill Road, Stow, MA

Topics during orchard tour will include codling moth/apple maggot fly/brown marmorated stink bug/spotted wing drosophila management, NEWA weather station and models, Accede EUP thinning results, return bloom promotion using PGR’s. 1 Pesticide recertification credit will be available. A light dinner will be served.

I think we are past primary apple scab season, though UMass is saying there is the potential for one more infection tomorrow, June 3rd. I expect most of you have sprayed a fungicide following the rainy Memorial Day Weekend anyway.
Plum curculio activity appears to be light this year. Insecticides applied this week should control plum curculio for the remainder of the season.
This week is also a good week to apply an insecticide to manage first generation codling moth larvae. If you’ve had a problem with codling moth in past years, consider applying an insecticide targeting codling moth such as Delegate, Altacor, or Exirel. A complete list of insecticides can be found at https://netreefruit.org/apples/spray-table/7-petal-fall-apple
If you’d like an orchard visit please contact me. I haven’t been making many unscheduled visits, but I can come to your orchard if you need me!

Hi Berry Growers,
Wonderful Mary Concklin from UConn has once again updated the pesticide chart on insecticides to manage spotted wing drosophila. The chart is attached. Thank you, Mary!!
And speaking of SWD, the Massachusetts Cultivated Blueberry Association is holding a virtual meeting on June 9th at 7:00PM with UMass’s Jaime Pinero speaking about managing SWD. You need to pre-register, and one pesticide credit is available. Pesticide credits from one New England state can be used for pesticide credit in any New England state. Register here:
I hope everyone and their berries are doing well!
