The office hosts information sessions during the course of the year to help you manage the process, from the planning and application, through the award stages. Check <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/fellowships\/\">their website<\/a> for information sessions and additional information.<\/p>\n<a class=\"cl-button block-level \" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/fellowships\/\" title=\"\">Office of National Fellowships<\/a>\n<h3>National Scholarships<\/h3>\n<h4>Boren Scholarships<\/h4>\n<p>On-campus deadline: First week of January<br \/>\nFirst Draft\/Priority Deadline: December<br \/>\nFor students interested in languages deemed critical to national security. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.borenawards.org\">Boren Scholarship<\/a> award will cover the cost of a proposed study abroad program up to $20,000 per academic year or $10,000 per semester. Special summer opportunity for students in the STEM disciplines is also available. Boren scholars must commit to seeking employment with the national security community for one year upon graduation. The Office of National Fellowships holds information sessions for students interested in applying.<\/p>\n<h4>Beatrice S. Demers Foreign Language Fellows Program ($1,000-25,000)<\/h4>\n<p>Deadline: January<br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rifoundation.org\/Scholarships\">Demers fund<\/a> provides for fellowships for Rhode Island residents AND anyone who is a student at a Rhode Island college or university who wishes to pursue foreign language study.&nbsp; Preference will be given to applicants from the University of Rhode Island. The Office of National Fellowships holds information sessions for students interested in applying.<\/p>\n<h4>Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship ($5,000 or $7,000)<\/h4>\n<p>Deadlines: October and March<br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iie.org\/gilman\">Gilman Scholarship Program<\/a> is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students with Pell Grant eligibility who are planning to study abroad. The program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. The Office of National Fellowships holds information sessions for students interested in applying.<\/p>\n<h3>Combined Scholarship Study Abroad Programs<\/h3>\n<p>Students may apply for funding to go abroad in a specific program, with the funding and the program linked together:<\/p>\n<h4>Critical Languages Scholarship<\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clscholarship.org\/languages\/arabic\/\">Critical Languages Scholarship (CLS)<\/a> program is a very competitive fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students. The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period.<\/p>\n<h3>Internal Funding<\/h3>\n<h4>William &#038; Sharon Flynn International Study Abroad Opportunity Fund<\/h4>\n<p>Deadline: April<br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/international\/flynnscholarship-2\/\">William &#038; Sharon Flynn International Study Abroad Opportunity Fund<\/a> provides grants for undergraduate and graduate students for international study related to their academic area(s) of interest. To qualify for this grant, applicants must be engaged in an intensive language experience that emphasizes in-depth experiential learning and\/or scholarly research. This scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis, with preference given to those students who demonstrate financial need.
