{"id":564,"date":"2013-09-24T18:23:56","date_gmt":"2013-09-24T18:23:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/library\/?page_id=564"},"modified":"2019-06-09T22:45:25","modified_gmt":"2019-06-10T02:45:25","slug":"policy-confidentiality","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/library\/about\/policies\/policy-confidentiality\/","title":{"rendered":"Confidentiality of Records Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In order to support the intellectual freedom of the members of the University of Rhode Island community, the University Libraries&nbsp;will \u201c&#8230; protect each library user\u2019s right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received, and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired, or transmitted.\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/advocacy\/proethics\/codeofethics\/codeethics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ALA Code of Ethics<\/a>, Article III)<\/p>\n<p>Rhode Island state law also makes clear the presumed right to privacy of library users. (<a href=\"http:\/\/webserver.rilin.state.ri.us\/Statutes\/TITLE11\/11-18\/11-18-32.HTM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R.I. General Laws, 11-18-32<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Under no circumstances, with the exception of being in compliance with applicable state and federal law, will the University Libraries&nbsp;release information about borrowers and their use of the Libraries\u2019 collections. Confidential library records will not be released or made available in any format to a federal agent, law enforcement officer, or other person unless a court order in proper form has been entered by a court of competent jurisdiction after a showing of good cause by the law enforcement agency or person seeking the records.<\/p>\n<p>University Libraries&nbsp;staff, working with legal counsel, will generally follow procedures as outlined in ALA\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/Template.cfm?Section=ifissues&amp;Template=\/ContentManagement\/ContentDisplay.cfm&amp;ContentID=21654\">\u201cConfidentiality and Coping with Law Enforcement Inquiries: Guidelines for the Library and Its Staff\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><em>Approved April 1, 2004, rev.
