{"id":11968,"date":"2022-04-10T08:56:56","date_gmt":"2022-04-10T12:56:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/maf\/?p=11968"},"modified":"2022-04-10T08:56:56","modified_gmt":"2022-04-10T12:56:56","slug":"port-planning-and-policy-class-visits-port-of-newport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/maf\/2022\/04\/10\/port-planning-and-policy-class-visits-port-of-newport\/","title":{"rendered":"Port Planning and Policy class visits port of Newport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The MAF 564 Port Planning and Policy class visited the Port of Newport on Friday April 8<sup>th<\/sup>, 2022.&nbsp; Several tours and briefs were enjoyed by the students.&nbsp; The Newport Harbormaster discussed the uniqueness of management and operations in Newport Harbor, which is primarily a port dedicated to support sailing, sailing races, yachts, and cruise ships.&nbsp; From the Harbormaster\u2019s office, the class walked over to Bowens Wharf and boarded the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry, a replica of an early 19<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century frigate.&nbsp; The Perry\u2019s Captain provided a great tour and a discussion regarding the ship\u2019s on-board youth maritime training programs.&nbsp; From there, the class drove over to the U.S. Coast Guard Station Castle Hill for a tour and brief regarding the station\u2019s missions (primarily search and rescue) and area of responsibility.&nbsp; The tour included boarding one the station\u2019s four fast response boats.&nbsp; For the spring 2022 semester, the class has or will visit the ports of Mystic Seaport, Davisville\/Quonset, Providence, Newport, and New Bedford.
