{"id":12993,"date":"2025-11-12T12:29:02","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T17:29:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/maf\/?p=12993"},"modified":"2026-09-25T10:47:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-25T14:47:13","slug":"jonathan-kabak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/maf\/2025\/11\/12\/jonathan-kabak\/","title":{"rendered":"Jonathan Kabak"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Degree program:<\/strong> M.M.A<br><strong>Year accepted:<\/strong> 2025<br><strong>Advisor:<\/strong> TBD<br><strong>Research:<\/strong>&nbsp; Maritime Educator, Professional Mariner, Sailor<br><strong>Background:<\/strong> B.A. History, Franklin Pierce College<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Profile:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0Growing up on a small island off the mid-Atlantic coast called Manhattan, Captain Jonathan Kabak comes to the Graduate Program in Marine Affairs after a multi decade career as a merchant mariner, maritime program director, and most recently as a non-profit executive.&nbsp; Having been introduced to the \u201cwatery part of the world\u201d through formative experiences in the Sea Scouts and at the South Street Seaport Museum during his youth in New York, Jonathan\u2019s career has focused extensively on building stronger connections to the maritime domain across diverse audiences ranging from professional mariners to environmental justice communities.&nbsp; These themes resonate in Jonathan\u2019s academic work where in addition to research on equitable ocean access, he is focused on regulatory issues impacting maritime transportation, most recently developments in autonomous vessel regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is currently CEO of Maritime Rhode Island, the not-for-profit organization which operates Rhode Island\u2019s Flagship the SSV OLIVER HAZARD PERRY and provides a multifaceted portfolio of programs that work to end \u201cOcean Blindness\u201d or the disconnect coastal communities have to the ocean through workforce development programs, K-12 STEAM initiatives, and community engagement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to his professional and academic work, Jonathan serves on the Ship Operations and Safety (Technical) Committee of Tall Ship America (where he is a former Chair), US Sailing\u2019s Safety at Sea Committee as Chair of the Moderator Working Group, and the Southeastern New England Harbor Safety Committee AMX (autonomous vehicle) sub-committee.
