With such high stakes for struggling for a more livable, just, and equitable present and future, our primary goal is to research and respond to possibilities for co-existences that foreground environmental justice. While none of us is exempt from entangled socioecological crises, disproportionate harms and benefits, fueled by environmental racism, injustice, and privilege, must be emphasized. To understand the complexities of environmental justice, this course presents heterogeneous experiences and ideas to counter universalizing logics that contribute to harmful and unlivable conditions.
The class will examine examples and manifestations of environmental injustice, including those facing Indigenous Peoples and other groups marginalized and disproportionately harmed by dominant systems and structures of power. We will focus on governmental and industry responses to environmental justice issues, as well as grassroots organizers, attorneys, and non-governmental organization members, among others. We will study how disproportionately affected communities and their allies empower themselves and work toward more just, fair, and sustainable relations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Required for : Elective Typical Semester : Spring Typically Taught By : Hilda Llor\u00e9ns Advanced examination of environmental justice from governance perspectives. Our world is profoundly shaped by precarity, intersectional injustices, and policies and practices that threaten life on Earth.
