A childhood spent listening to fisherman\u2019s stories and exploring the coast sparked her interest in studying the marine environment. She earned her B.S. in Marine Science, Concentration in Marine Biology, at the University of Maine Orono. While there, Skye spent her summers working as a deckhand and naturalist onboard a puffin and sightseeing tour boat in Bar Harbor. Through her work she educated people from around the world on topics such as local wildlife, marine science, conservation, and history. Through her interactions with passengers, she developed a passion for science communication and public perception of the marine environment. At the conclusion of her undergraduate experience, Skye received the distinction of High Honors on her undergraduate honours thesis which focused on how the presence of puffins in Maine affects local tourism. Throughout her life Skye has built her maritime experience working on commercial vessels including ferries, tour boats, fishing boats, research vessels, and pilot boats. Her broad research interests include information sharing and communication networks between marine stakeholders, and cooperative efforts in the face of climate change impacts on coastal communities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Skye is a second year Master of Arts in Marine Affairs student at the University of Rhode Island.
