She is interested in studying the effects of climate change on natural disasters, as well as natural disaster mitigation in at-risk communities.

Zoe is originally from St. Paul, Minnesota. She has her bachelor’s degree in biology and environmental science from St. Olaf College, a small liberal arts college located in Northfield, Minnesota. In undergrad, she participated in cell biology research on the single-celled eukaryotic model organism Tetrahymena thermophila under Dr. Kim Kandl and ecological research on common milkweed with Dr. Emily Mohl through St. Olaf’s Collaborative Undergraduate Research and Inquiry program. These experiences encouraged Zoe to pursue a career in research.

In the spring semester of 2024, Zoe spent one month in New Zealand and three months in Australia on an environmental science program. While there, she took region-specific courses in terrestrial ecology, marine biology, cultural anthropology, and environmental policy. Her experience in Oceania inspired her to explore future career opportunities in the marine environmental field—both in the scientific and socio-political realms.

After graduating from St. Olaf, Zoe spent a year working as a veterinary assistant while exploring careers in the marine science field. As a vet assistant, she gained skills in customer service and education, animal restraint, vaccine administration, blood and urine lab testing, and more. While she enjoyed working at the vet, she was drawn to the marine science field more than the veterinary field. What attracted her to the Marine Affairs program was its interdisciplinary nature, research focus, and the career opportunities post-graduation.

After completing her degree at URI, Zoe hopes to combine her interests in science and the humanities by aiding at-risk communities in disaster mitigation. In her free time, she enjoys being outside hiking, running, swimming, reading, and trying new coffee shops with friends and family.

Degree program: M.A.M.AYear accepted: 2026Advisor: TBDResearch: Climate Change and Natural Disasters, Natural Disaster Mitigation, At-Risk CommunitiesBackground: B.A. Biology and Environmental Science, St. Olaf College Zoe Fallgatter is a first-year Master of Arts in Marine Affairs student at the University of Rhode Island.
