{"id":3470,"date":"2017-01-27T12:52:26","date_gmt":"2017-01-27T17:52:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/maf\/?p=3470"},"modified":"2017-01-27T12:52:26","modified_gmt":"2017-01-27T17:52:26","slug":"lee-benaka-mma-1997-receives-silver-sherman-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/maf\/2017\/01\/27\/lee-benaka-mma-1997-receives-silver-sherman-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Lee Benaka (MMA 1997) Receives Silver Sherman Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--themify_builder_static--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1619\/Lee_Banka-e1493219828275.jpg\"  rel=\"lightbox[3470] attachment wp-att-3471\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1619\/Lee_Banka-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Lee_Banka\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>In the fall of 2015, NOAA Under Secretary Dr. Kathryn Sullivan initiated an internal honorary award with the creation of the Order of\u00a0Sherman\u2019s Lagoon, also known as the\u00a0Silver\u00a0Sherman\u00a0Award.\u00a0 Jim Toomey, illustrator of the daily cartoon,\u00a0Sherman\u2019s Lagoon, which shares the exploits of\u00a0Sherman\u00a0the shark and also educates readers about the environment, agreed to NOAA using\u00a0Sherman\u2019s image for this new award.\u00a0 The award recognizes employees who go above and beyond their normal responsibilities to help fulfill NOAA\u2019s mission.\u00a0 Each NOAA member of the Senior Executive Service gets one award per calendar year.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2016, NOAA Fisheries Office of Science and Technology Director Ned Cyr announced that Lee Benaka was the recipient of the 2016 (inaugural)\u00a0Silver\u00a0Sherman\u00a0Award for the Office of Science and Technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The citation on Lee&#8217;s award certificate reads:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lee Benaka is NOAA Fisheries\u2019 &#8220;Bycatch Ambassador.&#8221; Under his leadership, the National Bycatch Report Update 2 and the Discard Mortality Action Plan were both published this year.
