Part II – Procedure for Establishing the Academic Calendar<\/strong><\/p>\n Part II contains rules and regulations governing procedures for the creation and approval of the academic calendar.<\/p>\n Academic Calendar <\/strong><\/p>\n 8.70.09<\/strong> removed #18-19-34<\/a><\/p>\n 8.70.10<\/strong> Preparation.<\/strong> An eight-year calendar for fall, winter, and spring semesters shall be maintained. The academic year consists of a 16-week (Fall Semester) and a 15-week Spring semester, with a 15-week summer term acting as a trailer to the academic year. The 15-week summer term may be optional or required depending on the student\u2019s program. Each semester also contains two consecutive seven-week mini-sessions. The academic calendar committee, in consultation with the Registrar, uses the above guidelines to set dates for the academic calendars. #14-15–08, <\/a>#16-17-23,<\/a> #17-18-23<\/a>, #20-21-24 <\/a> #25-26-CBUM-03<\/a> #25-26-FSEC-11<\/a> 8.70.23<\/strong> For classes offered in the Regular Session, a minimum of five days shall be scheduled for final examinations. Saturdays and Sundays may be used as final examination days under extraordinary circumstances. #01-02–27, #18-19-24,<\/a> #19-20-8<\/a> #25-26-FSEC-11<\/a><\/p>\n 8.70.24<\/strong> For classes offered in the Regular Sessions, whenever possible, there should be a uniform distribution of class days among the five weekdays. #25-26-FSEC-11<\/a><\/p>\n 8.70.25<\/strong> Classes will not be scheduled on the following days:<\/p>\n Labor Day<\/p>\n Veteran’s Day #25-26-FSEC-12<\/a><\/p>\n Thanksgiving Day, the Friday following, and the Wednesday preceding. For years in which a No-Class Day on the Wednesday preceding Thanksgiving Day will result in too few class meeting days, classes are to be held on Columbus Day\/ Indigenous Peoples’ Day. #23-24-22<\/a><\/p>\n Christmas Day Juneteenth (June 19) #23-24-22<\/a> An accelerated online session may occasionally be 1-2 days shorter to accommodate holiday schedules. #25-26-FSEC-11<\/a><\/p>\n 8.70.30<\/strong> The Fall Semester.<\/strong> The fall semester (including final examinations) must end no later than December 23. #01-02\u201327<\/p>\n 8.70.40<\/strong> The Spring Semester.<\/strong> For classes offered in the Regular Sessions, mid-semester break in the spring semester shall be the week immediately following midterm. #01-02–27 #25-26-FSEC-11<\/a><\/p>\n 8.70.50<\/strong> The Winter J-Term Session<\/strong> shall present programs in the colleges and departments of the University to permit students to accelerate or enrich their studies. It shall also offer an expanded program of graduate work, workshops, conferences and travel courses. #12-13–21<\/a>, #18-19-34<\/a><\/p>\n 8.70.51<\/strong> The Winter J-Term Session runs from January 2 through the Friday before spring semester begins, with timetables and meeting schedules to be determined on a course-by-course basis. Travel-based courses may require travel before or after these dates. Grades for Winter J-Term courses will be due before the spring semester begins. #12-13–21<\/a>; #13-14-2<\/a>, #18-19-34<\/a><\/p>\n 8.70.52<\/strong> Winter J-Term Session courses shall be scheduled in accordance with procedures for fall and spring semesters. #12-13–21<\/a>, #18-19-34<\/a><\/p>\n 8.70.60 Summer Session.<\/strong> Summer Term begins on the Monday following the last day of Spring Semester Final Exams. Summer Term will consist of 6 sessions. Online 1(OL1), online 2 (OL2), Summer Session 1 (SS1), Summer Session 2 (SS2), Summer Session 3 (SS3), and Alternate Summer Session (Alt). The summer sessions (OL1, OL2) of the fully-online accelerated calendar shall consist of two seven-week (47-day) sessions with at least a five-day break between each session. If the session begins or ends on a state holiday when URI offices are closed, the session shall start and\/or end a day later. Summer Session 1 (SS1) runs for five weeks, starting on the Monday following Commencement. Summer Session 2 (SS2) runs for five weeks, starting on the Monday following the end of Summer Session 1. Summer Session 3 (SS3) runs for 10 weeks, starting on the Monday following Commencement and ending at the same time as Summer Session 2. Any course that does not follow the calendar for Summer Sessions 1, 2, or 3 is listed as an alternate Summer Session. The open add period extends for 5 days for Summer Session 1, 2, and alternate Summer Session, and extends for 10 days for Session 3. These add periods apply to directed and independent studies. Summer Sessions may also include credit-bearing, faculty-led programs that entail travel and do not adhere to the timing of Session 1, 2, or 3. The Committee shall review the calendar and present it to the Faculty Senate by December 1. #01-02-27 #16-17-16, <\/a>#16-17-23<\/a>, #17-18-23, #18-19-34<\/a>, #20-21-24<\/a> #25-26-A-01<\/a><\/p>\n 8.70.70<\/strong><\/span> Fully-Online Accelerated Programs.<\/strong><\/span> The University has included in the Academic Calendar 7-week sessions for specific fully-online accelerated programs. A three-year \u2018pilot\u2019, beginning in Fall 2027, will allow enrolled graduate students from programs that opt in to cross-enroll in both 7- and 14-week sessions. Undergraduate students enrolled in four programs may also be allowed to cross-enroll in both 7- and 14-week sessions: RN to B.S., Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies, Early Childhood Care and Education, Strategic Communication. In-person courses and programs must operate in the regular sessions. Graduate and undergraduate enrollment in both 7- and 14-week sessions is contingent on each program\u2019s department, or college for non-departmentalized colleges, voting in favor of participation in this \u2018pilot\u2019. In summer 2030, affected faculty and students will evaluate the impact of allowing undergraduate and graduate students in their program to simultaneously take courses in both the 7-week and 14-week programs. In fall 2030 the results of these evaluations will be presented to the Faculty Senate.
