Quebecol and Maple

Disclaimer: The findings discussed are lab based and further studies need to be done.

Maple Syrup is a great alternative to common sweeteners in part due to a molecule found within called quebecol. This compound is known to have antioxidant properties shown to decrease the risk of many diseases and cancers. The University of Rhode Island researchers found this new compound by extracting and analyzing molecules in Canadian Maple Syrup. The results showed that quebecol, and closely related compounds, were able to effectively kill some cancer cells. This is exciting news for the medicinal world. There are already prescription medications on the market that are similar to this compound. For example, a common chemotherapy drug, Tamoxifen, is widely used to treat breast cancer and is remarkably similar to quebecol. But, Tamoxifen is known to have some severe side effects. Quebecol could be a future alternative treatment method, as it has been found in maple syrup consumed for centuries and has some anticancer effects.
