TAYLOR POINT RESTORATION

Freebody Drive | Jamestown, RI 02835

Project Leaders – Nadine Mendelsohn, Kitty Wineberg

The view from Taylor Point is of the East Passage of Narragansett Bay. The 20 plus acres are located at Freebody Drive in Jamestown across from the RI Turnpike Bridge Authority Plaza. The project is managed by the Taylor Point Restoration Association (TPRA) (http://taylorpoint.org/) under a Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) 5-year permit and with the Town of Jamestown.  Invasive plants such as Morrow Honeysuckle, Oriental Bittersweet, Black Swallowwort and Autumn Olive, to name a few, cover the trails, fishing access areas and viewing points.

Volunteers are trained to identify plants and to follow best practices to remove invasive plants, nurture existing native species, and plant native species. Training and tools are provided. One of the goals of this project is to educate the public about the benefits of restoring habitat in their residential property, land trusts, town properties and open space work sites. Opportunities are also available to work on the development of an online Taylor Point Plant Atlas.

The restoration schedule is year-round on alternating Saturday mornings.  The schedule is published by TPRA for each season along with a weekly reminder.  Volunteers are asked to wear closed toe shoes, long pants and long sleeve shirts for their protection.
