A total of 30 credits is required for either option, with a maximum of 9 credits of 400-level course work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thesis Option<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The thesis option requires:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>30 credits<\/li><li>21-24 credits of course work (exclusive of seminar)<\/li><li>One distinct course in each of the three department core areas from the following selections: <ul><li>Fluid mechanics\/thermal sciences\u2014EGR 515, MCE 541, 545, 546, 550, 551, 552, 562, 580, 653<\/li><li>Solid mechanics\u2014MCE 550, 552, 561, 565, 568, 571, 576, 671, 678, 679, 680<\/li><li>Mechanical systems\u2014MCE 503, 504, 523, 530, 534, 538, 549, 563, 564, 566, 567, 663<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>MCE 501, 502, graduate seminar (required of all full-time students)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Non-Thesis Option<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The non-thesis option is for part-time students only, and requires:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>30 credits<\/li><li>One course in each of the department core areas<\/li><li>One special problems course requiring a substantial paper involving significant independent study<\/li><li>A comprehensive examination<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>M.S. in Mechanical Engineering Program Requirements M.S. students can choose a thesis or non-thesis (part-time only) option.
