{"id":9299,"date":"2019-10-18T17:39:05","date_gmt":"2019-10-18T21:39:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/metcalfinstitute.org\/?p=9299"},"modified":"2025-09-02T12:58:27","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T16:58:27","slug":"edward-ortiz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/metcalf\/edward-ortiz\/","title":{"rendered":"Edward Ortiz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9386\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/metcalf\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1211\/Edward-Ortiz-landing-page.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"203\"><\/p>\n<p>Edward Ortiz, reporter at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/\">The Sacramento Bee<\/a>, calls his experience at Metcalf Institute \u201cgroundbreaking,\u201d especially his one-on-one interactions with scientists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce a scientist knows that you have a good basic understanding of the science, an element of trust develops,\u201d said Ortiz. \u201cThe researcher becomes more open to helping you understand the issues and more likely to give you the important quotes you need to tell your story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz, a Metcalf Institute Environmental Reporting Fellow at the time of the Annual Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists, spent a month studying marine and environmental science at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gso.uri.edu\/\">URI\u2019s Graduate School of Oceanography<\/a>&nbsp;and nine months reporting for&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.providencejournal.com\/\">The Providence Journal<\/a>. That\u2019s where he got to know Peter Lord, environment reporter for the Journal and former co-journalism director for Metcalf Institute.
