Since then, the Ocean State has spawned hundreds of companies contributing to our nation\u2019s naval and military superiority. However, it\u2019s not always easy for small businesses to break into the industry and manufacture products at scale and with the proper security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To fill those gaps, the URI Research Foundation has helped launch a new program, RIMADE (Rhode Island Manufacturing to Accelerate the Defense Ecosystem), which provides funding and expertise of URI faculty and students to advise companies on what they need to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole goal of the program is to strengthen and expand Rhode Island\u2019s defense industrial base,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/polarismep.org\/profile\/Taylor-Greene\/\"><strong>Taylor Greene<\/strong><\/a>, program manager with Polaris MEP (Manufacturing Extension Partnership), a nonprofit business unit of the URI Research Foundation that administers the program. \u201cWe do that by modernizing the local supply chain.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5081\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5081\" style=\"width: 356px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5081\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/momentum\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/898\/RI-Made-09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"356\" height=\"305\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5081\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taylor Greene, Program Manager, Polaris Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"fullwidth\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/polarismep.org\/\">Polaris MEP<\/a> puts together teams of URI faculty and students who carry out assessments of small- to medium-sized businesses in three areas: automation and robotics, cyber resiliency, and risk mitigation.<\/p>\n<p>Once they identify the needs of the companies, the program provides recommendation and guidance, as well as funding up to $50,000 to implement projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRhode Island manufacturers supporting the defense supply chain have seen an increase in demand and expressed a need for automation and data analytics,\u201d says URI Research Foundation Executive Director <a href=\"https:\/\/401techbridge.org\/team\/\"><strong>Christian Cowan<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cWe are thrilled to provide this new program to support technology-based programs that will support our ecosystem and national defense.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-quote-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-quote  \"><blockquote>\u201cRhode Island manufacturers supporting the defense supply chain have seen an increase in demand and expressed a need for automation and data analytics.\u201d <\/blockquote><cite>Christian Cowan, URI Research Foundation Executive Director <\/cite><\/div><\/section>\n<p>For automation and robotics, Polaris MEP has partnered with the Pittsburgh-based <a href=\"https:\/\/arminstitute.org\/\">ARM Institute<\/a> (Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing) to help identify areas where robotics makes sense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re all well aware of staffing shortages in some of these manufacturing companies, so they look at areas where it might make sense to automate a process and have a machine take on some of that manual labor,\u201d says Greene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the area of cyber resiliency, the project has partnered with Chicago-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mxdusa.org\/\">The Digital Manufacturing and Cybersecurity Institute<\/a> to help companies come into compliance with the stringent standards required by the Department of Defense (DoD) to safeguard data and protect against malware.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5078\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5078\" style=\"width: 1000px\" production automation to cyber security.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"fullwidth\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good way to pull expertise from outside of the state from two organizations well-known for their proficiency in these areas and to impart some of that knowledge on our teams that will then help take these local companies to the next level,\u201d says <strong>Erik Brine<\/strong>, URI Research Foundation director of defense sector R&amp;D initiatives and operations.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to risk management, URI faculty from the College of Business, including professors <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/business\/meet\/anis-triki\/\">Anis Triki<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/business\/meet\/dave-kale\/\">Devendra Kale<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/business\/meet\/mehmet-gokhan-yalcin\/\">Mehmet Gokhan Yalcin<\/a>, along with PhD candidate Muhammad Hasan Ashraf, are able to advise companies on supply chain management, workforce development, and employee retention.<\/p>\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-quote-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-quote  \"><blockquote>\u201cHaving the infrastructure in place that allows us to create an integrated flow so we could work more efficiently would be incredibly valuable.\u201d<\/blockquote><cite>Ian Estaphan Owen<\/cite><\/div><\/section>\n<p>Launching this spring, RIMADE has worked with three companies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaia.tech\/\">Jaia Robotics<\/a>, which builds micro-sized underwater robots; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nautilusdefense.com\/\">Nautilus Defense<\/a>, which creates textile-based wearable and underwater sensors; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrostandards.com\/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwldKmBhCCARIsAP-0rfy2f866ncQTd42L9Rnb2AsuIiujAPT4Uh1MvWjnaHsrG9MAJyfIDbQaAieaEALw_wcB\">Electro Standards Laboratories<\/a>, which engineers electronic components for network communication, data acquisition, and power electronics.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\">For Jaia, founded in Newport, RI, in 2020, the expertise RIMADE provides will be crucial in tightening cybersecurity to meet government standards, says co-founder and CEO <\/span><a style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jaia.tech\/about\/\">Ian Estaphan Owen<\/a><span style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\">.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fullwidth\">\n<p>\u201cAs we get more embedded in DoD work, we need to improve our security systems,\u201d he says. \u201cSo, having a baseline of where we are now and a roadmap of what we need to do to create a more secure environment is so important.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jaia\u2019s vision is to provide an affordable multi vehicle solution that can collect synoptic data by having multiple vehicles that cost $10,000 each rather than other systems that cost $500,000 to $10 million, which Owen calls \u201cDemocratize Aquatic Data Collection.\u201d To do that, they have invented the JaiaBot, a micro-sized aquatic drone that can work in pods of one or many.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5082\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5082\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5082\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/momentum\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/898\/Ian-Owen-v2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"fullwidth\">\n<p>A pod of JaiaBots can be used to rapidly collect oceanographic data over wide areas for academic research and commercial operations.<\/p>\n<p>There are also multiple defense applications, such as the ability collect surf zone data which includes bathymetry, bottom type, wave heights, current vectors, temperature, and salinity. This data is critical to ensure conditions are safe for amphibious operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe provide a rapid reconnaissance capability without putting people in the water, so you are keeping people out of harm\u2019s way,\u201d Owen says.<\/p>\n<p>So far, Jaia has been operating on a small scale, having produced about 60 bots. As it ramps up production, the company plans to contract with an outside manufacturer. Owen hopes that RIMADE can also provide guidance on automating the process by which it communicates orders to that manufacturer to better create products at scale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving the infrastructure in place that allows us to create an integrated flow so we could work more efficiently would be incredibly valuable,\u201d Owen says.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5080\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5080\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5080 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/momentum\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/898\/RI-Made-07.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"554\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5080\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The JaiaBot, an affordable micro-sized, high-speed aquatic drone that works in pods of one to many to collect aquatic data at scale.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Eventually, Greene says, the program will work with a half-dozen companies each spring, summer, and fall. In addition to helping companies, the program will ensure that URI faculty are teaching students relevant lessons for the real world, as well as giving students exposure to local businesses where they might obtain an internship or future employment.<\/p>\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-quote-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-quote  \"><blockquote>\u201cWe want to make sure that Rhode Island is a good partner in the supply chain for the Department of Defense so they can assist in the bigger picture of our national defense.\u201d<\/blockquote><cite>Taylor Greene<\/cite><\/div><\/section>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really giving them the opportunity to take what they are learning in the classroom and apply it practically,\u201d Greene says.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, they can know that they are playing a vital role in helping to keep the nation safe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make sure that Rhode Island is a good partner in the supply chain for the Department of Defense so they can assist in the bigger picture of our national defense,\u201d Greene says. \u201cCompanies don\u2019t have the bandwidth to do this on their own.
