She won this award for her tireless work for human rights, environmental protection, nonviolence, and peace for the Afro-descendant communities in Puerto Rico and other places.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29801\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29801\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29801 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1658\/Llore\u0301ns5_atcommunitygardenwithyouth_2018_photocredit_YaminetteRodriguez-300x182.jpeg\" alt=\"A photo of Dr. Llorens at a community Garden\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29801\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Llor<span style=\"color: #0e101a\">\u00e9<\/span>ns at a community garden.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a\">Dr. Llor\u00e9ns is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island. She teaches cultural, linguistic, and environmental anthropology courses. Her research and writing are concerned with understanding how race, racialization, gender, socioeconomic class, social practices of power, and structural inequalities intersect in several socio-cultural and environmental life areas. Her research interests include cultural production and national representations, migration, diaspora, and the environment and <\/span><span style=\"color: #0e101a\">ecology in the Americas. She has written widely about these topics in academic journals and popular readership online and in print magazines. Her scholarly books include&nbsp;<em>Imaging the Great Puerto Rican Family: Framing Nation, Race and Gender during the American&nbsp;<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #0e101a\">Century&nbsp;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #0e101a\">(2014) and&nbsp;<em>Making Livable Worlds: Afro-Puerto Rican Women&nbsp;<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #0e101a\">Building Environmental Justice&nbsp;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #0e101a\">(2021). She advocated and realized grants for electricity and clean water for the community.
