As she learned about different cultures, she felt that studying abroad would add something to her experience, both personally and academically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI still had that passport, and it was still valid!\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She selected a three-week winter&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/global\/study-abroad\/educational-trips\/\">J Term program<\/a>&nbsp;in Cuba. \u201cWe left not long after the presidential election in the U.S.,\u201d Africa says. \u201cFidel Castro had recently died, so it was an interesting moment politically, with a lot of change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students spent the majority of their time in homestays, called&nbsp;<em>casa particulares<\/em>, a government-run program allowing Cubans to rent out whole apartments or houses to travelers. \u201cThe families were so welcoming,\u201d she says. \u201cWe spent a lot of time just talking to our hosts about their perspectives and their hopes for their country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Africa was surprised at how much she connected to her own culture through the experience. \u201cI didn\u2019t expect to see so many people who looked like me,\u201d she noted. \u201cAnd it was interesting to see that they lived primarily in the poorer neighborhoods.\u201d She enjoyed listening to the Afro-Cuban music and thinking about how different groups within the African diaspora express their culture.
