On Sunday, March 26th, VOICES 21C<\/a>, a Boston-based community-focused artists\u2019 collective whose members include several URI Music Department alums, is partnering with The Center for the Humanities and the URI Department of Music to perform a concert at the Fine Arts Center<\/a> on the topic of mass-incarceration in the US. This concert will include formerly-incarcerated spoken word artists Truth and Onyx White and URI’s very own Concert Choir. VOICES 21C is dedicated to performances that amplify social justice issues in the US and abroad, elevating the voices of the silenced, the forgotten, and the marginalized. The collective imagines the choir as a locus for creativity, compassion, justice, resistance, empowerment, and equity. This performance interrogates our understanding of race and the prison industrial complex in the United States through music and spoken word reflecting on our country, our voices in it, lived experiences of several incarcerated and formerly incarcerated artists, and how we can build stronger relationships on a path towards justice for all. The performance will conclude with a talk back to reflect on what the audience has experienced and hear from our artists regarding their artistic process and personal experience. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
