The URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies and the URI Chaplains Association have
honored Skyla Anderson with the Dr. MLK Jr. Peacemaker Award for her significant
contributions to dialogue, inclusivity, unity, and peace on the URI campus.
Skyla Anderson is a sophomore at URI majoring in Public Relations. She is passionate about
social justice, inclusivity, and community. Skyla works tirelessly to create an environment where
all students feel heard and supported. She promotes dialogue, diversity, and equality among
students from various cultural backgrounds.
In addition to her conflict resolution efforts, Skyla fosters a sense of belonging by advocating for
peace, love, and positive change both on campus and in the broader community. She actively
supports students in prioritizing their well-being by organizing emotional intelligence
workshops, mindfulness practices, and mental health awareness events.
Hailing from Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Skyla is a proud Cape Verdean and serves as the Cape
Verdean Student Association (CVSA) President at URI. By championing collaboration and
compassion, Skyla Anderson is enhancing the campus climate and inspiring others to embody
the values of peace and respect in their daily lives. Her dedication to fostering peace at URI
makes the University of Rhode Island a more harmonious and welcoming community.
Her friend, Jordan Laroche, described Skyla Anderson as “a beacon of peace at the University of
