The URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies, along with the URI Chaplains Association,
has honored Professor Deirdre Morrison with the Dr. MLK Jr. Peacemaker Award for her
significant contributions to social justice, active listening, nonviolent communication, and
peacebuilding both on the URI campus and beyond.
Deirdre Morrison exemplifies the virtues of nonviolence in all her work. She serves as an
Adjunct Professor of Communication Studies, a Consultant for the Speaking Center, and a
meditation facilitator for the URiMindful group. Additionally, she teaches yoga on the URI
campus. However, her contributions to peace and nonviolence extend well beyond her
professional responsibilities.
As an educator, Deirdre creates a dynamic classroom environment where students develop a
meaningful connection to academic learning and their roles as peaceful and responsible change
agents. She takes Global Civic Responsibility seriously and is a strong advocate for marginalized
populations.
Deirdre’s work emphasizes positive change, peaceful communication, holistic well-being,
resilience, and advocacy for justice and human rights. Her Communication Studies lectures
incorporate engaging activities and case studies related to social justice, environmental
sustainability, and peacebuilding. Deirdre believes in the importance of lifelong learning and
that, as global citizens, we must cultivate practical, ethical, and compassionate communication
skills to enhance our civic engagement with the world.
Her personal and professional mission is to foster positive change at URI and beyond, inspiring
others to communicate effectively, peacefully, ethically, and compassionately. She aims to be a
supportive role model, committed to delivering clear, consistent, and peaceful communication in
all her interactions.
Deirdre Morrison is a graduate of URI’s MBA program and is a certified Level 1 Trainer in
Kingian Nonviolence and Conflict Reconciliation. She is dedicated to supporting the URI
community and beyond through education, practice, and volunteering to promote social justice,
