Admission

Pre-Licensure (Traditional Program)

All new and transfer students should refer to the University of Rhode Island admission website for specific admission requirements. If you attended the University of Rhode Island as a degree seeking student in the past you must apply for readmission (see below).

RN to BS

Online Program: All students should refer to our RN to BS Online website. If you attended the University of Rhode Island as a degree seeking student in the past you must apply for readmission (see below).

Graduate Programs

Masters (MS) Program: All new students should refer to the concentration specific webpage for application and admission requirements. All new and transfer graduate applicants can apply online here. If you attended the University of Rhode Island as a degree seeking student in the past you must apply for re-enrollment (see bottom of page).

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program: All new students should refer to the BS to DNP or MS to DNP webpage for application and admission requirements. Readmission

Students who have been enrolled at URI in the past must apply for readmission. This includes any student who has attended URI at any point in their college career as a matriculated student.

RN-BS Student (Online or On Campus) Requirements:

  • Associates Degree or Diploma in Nursing
  • 2.6 GPA
  • Copy of nursing license
  • Readmission form
  • Personal Statement (Why Nursing at URI?, What experiences have you had post URI?, What makes you a strong candidate?)
  • Official Transcript
  • Please specify if you are applying for readmission into the on campus or accelerated online program. Please note the online program runs in 7-week courses cycles (new!). Students will not be allowed to combine on campus and online course curriculum.

Pre-Licensure (Traditional Program) Requirements:

Readmission applications are reviewed by the Scholastic Standing Committee (SSC) at the end of each semester. The SSC looks for strength in the sciences and a grade point average over 3.0. Applicants must complete the following courses with a ‘C’ or better: Writing (WRT 104 or 106), Introductory Chemistry (CHM 103), Intro. to Organic Chemistry (CHM 124), Human Anatomy (BIO 121), and Human Physiology (BIO 242/244). Admission is not guaranteed even if pre-requisites are met. To apply for readmission, please submit the following materials:

  • Readmission Form
  • Personal Statement
  • Transcripts from Other Institutions
  • All materials must be mailed to:

Graduate Degree Requirements:

A complete review of the applicant’s academic record will be conducted by the College of Nursing and by the Dean of the Graduate School before a decision will be made on an application to re-enroll. The final decision on the application is made by the Dean of the Graduate School. If the request is approved, conditions for re-enrollment may be specified. Please note that back-CRG fees must be charged for every semester that you have not registered. To apply for re-enrollment, please submit the following:

  • Re-enrollment Application
  • An explanation for why continuous enrollment was not maintained
  • An updated Program of Study
  • A research proposal, where appropriate
  • A schedule for the completion of remaining requirements
  • A request for a brief extension, if necessary
