{"id":14657,"date":"2019-10-18T10:17:14","date_gmt":"2019-10-18T14:17:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/nursing\/?p=14657"},"modified":"2019-10-18T10:18:06","modified_gmt":"2019-10-18T14:18:06","slug":"former-dean-delivers-colleges-fall-distinguished-lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/nursing\/2019\/10\/18\/former-dean-delivers-colleges-fall-distinguished-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Former dean delivers College&#8217;s Fall Distinguished Lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Hesook Suzie Kim discusses essential qualities of successful nurse<\/h3>\n<p>The &#8220;Essence of Nursing&#8221; can be broken down into a five-level nursing framework that promotes a deep understanding of how nursing should be holistically practiced rather than focusing on particular nursing competencies.<\/p>\n<p>That framework \u2014 along with the integral components of nursing practice, including essential tools, collaboration, knowledge application, competence, expertise, and quality of practice \u2014 was the subject of the College of Nursing&#8217;s annual Fall Distinguished Lecture, delivered by former Dean and Professor Emeritus Hesook Suzie Kim Oct. 16.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14672 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/963\/IMG_5588-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/963\/IMG_5588-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/963\/IMG_5588-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/963\/IMG_5588-364x243.jpg 364w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/963\/IMG_5588-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/963\/IMG_5588.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>&#8220;Our aim as nurses is to advance our practice,&#8221; Kim told the audience of fellow nurses, as well as nursing students and professors at the Nursing Education Center in Providence. &#8220;This model is a guide for developing competence and excellence in nursing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The model is the subject of Dr. Kim&#8217;s latest book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Essence-Nursing-Practice-Philosophy-Perspective\/dp\/0826194281\/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=The+Essence+of+Nursing+Practice&amp;qid=1571404960&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;The Essence of Nursing Practice: Philosophy and Perspective,&#8221;<\/a> which provides an in-depth analysis of nursing practice as a concept and area of study, rather than as an aggregation of specific techniques and skills. She served as dean of the college from 1983 to 1988, and remains prefessor emeritus. She also was a professor at the Institute of Nursing Science at University of Oslo in Norway from 1992 to 2003.
