{"id":20434,"date":"2025-02-04T16:07:41","date_gmt":"2025-02-04T21:07:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/nursing\/?p=20434"},"modified":"2025-02-04T16:08:47","modified_gmt":"2025-02-04T21:08:47","slug":"nursing-students-apply-classroom-knowledge-in-real-world-settings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/nursing\/2025\/02\/04\/nursing-students-apply-classroom-knowledge-in-real-world-settings\/","title":{"rendered":"Nursing students apply classroom knowledge in real clinical settings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>450 URI nursing students are working in a variety of healthcare settings during clinical rotations<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hospitals, nursing homes, community health clinics and more are getting a boost in personnel while helping prepare the next generation of healthcare workers, as 450 University of Rhode Island College of Nursing students head into the community on clinical rotations at more than two dozen facilities around the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through clinical placements, students gain experience in numerous care settings, including medical-surgical, pediatrics, maternity, psychiatric\/mental health and community health. As senior level students approach graduation, they are placed in clinical immersion to work side-by-side with a nurse in preparation for the transition to professional practice.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe clinical experiences in the undergraduate nursing curriculum serve to increase students&#8217; knowledge, skill and professional growth,\u201d said Clinical Programs Coordinator Donna Donilon. \u201cThrough clinical placements, students are able to apply knowledge learned in didactic classes to patient care in the healthcare environment. For most, this is their first experience with patient care and working in a hospital environment, an exciting and nerve-wracking prospect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t worked with patients before, so I\u2019m a little nervous, but I can\u2019t wait to get the experience,\u201d said Madeline Stahly, who is working with patients at Newport Hospital. \u201cI really want to get a feel for things, and what it\u2019s really like to work in a hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stahley was joined by several of her classmates recently as they were fit-tested for N-95 masks, an annual requirement for nurses. Each mask is custom-fit to the health care worker\u2019s face, ensuring 95 percent of particles in the air are blocked. The fit test took a bit more commitment than most from sophomore Grant Clifton, who had to shave his full beard to ensure a proper seal before heading to South County Hospital, where he\u2019s \u201cexcited to get more knowledge and experience in how to care for patients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Classmate Sierah Lavigne has begun her rotation at Westerly Hospital, where she\u2019s looking forward to work alongside experienced nurses who she said can help her apply what she knows in a real-world setting. \u201cIt\u2019ll be great to have nurse supervisors, so we can ask questions and really understand what we need to do,\u201d Lavigne said. \u201cIt\u2019s really going to help maintain all the knowledge we\u2019ve gotten in class and transfer it to actual practice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students
