Basic Competency Requirements
All applicants are required to provide evidence of meeting the RI Department of Education’s (RIDE) basic competency requirements for admission. URI offers three courses through which applicants can meet the basic competency requirements.

Applicants can also provide evidence of meeting the RIDE basic competency requirements for admission through meeting the minimum score requirements from the testing opportunities below.

Evidence of basic competencies may be mixed and matched: For example, if you meet passing scores in SAT Evidence-based Reading & Writing, but do not pass the SAT Math, you may use a passing grade (B) or better in EDC 280.
Praxis CORE Test Resources and Information
- Praxis scores can take up to 4 weeks to be issued. Please plan accordingly and take the tests at least 4 weeks prior to the admission deadline for score submission to URI.
- Most Praxis tests can be taken every 21 days. This means that you will need to wait approximately 3 weeks from one test until you can retake the same test (if needed).

- ETS Accommodations for English Language Learners (can take up to 4 months for approval- plan early)
- For either option above, several documents must be completed and mailed in to ETS when you register, please plan ahead
We recommend that you start planning for the Praxis CORE tests early so that you will have more than one opportunity to take the tests.
