{"id":11294,"date":"2010-06-01T10:00:30","date_gmt":"2010-06-01T10:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/?p=11294"},"modified":"2010-06-01T10:00:30","modified_gmt":"2010-06-01T10:00:30","slug":"newslettersummer2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/2010\/06\/01\/newslettersummer2010\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni Profile: Louise DiChiara Pastore, Class of 1983"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"chunk\">\n<h1>Alumni Profile<\/h1>\n<h3>Louise DiChiara Pastore, Class of 1983<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1223\/louise.png\" rel=\"lightbox[11294]\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11308\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1223\/louise-283x300.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>Louise DiChiara Pastore is a College of Pharmacy alumnus who used her degree in pharmacy as a stepping-stone to a new career.\u00a0 Graduating in 1983, a time when women were beginning to become more prominent in professional pharmacy, Pastore worked as a pharmacist for three years before returning to school to become an optometrist.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen I was in pharmacy school, I really liked healthcare, but I felt like I wanted to do something a bit different,\u201d says Pastore.\u00a0 \u201cMy dad was an optometrist, and several people encouraged me to attend graduate school.\u00a0 I was interested in eyes, so optometry followed naturally.\u201d<br \/>\nPastore\u2019s graduate work would help her become an accomplished optometrist and owner of Garden City Eye Care in Cranston, Rhode Island, a business started by her father, Frank DiChiara.\u00a0 Despite her success in optometry, Pastore appreciates the value of her preparation in pharmacy school as instrumental in her career in healthcare today.\u00a0 \u201cI recommend pharmacy school to high school students who are interested in medicine but aren\u2019t sure which field they want to go into.\u00a0 When you graduate from pharmacy school, you have a usable degree and you are ahead of the curve when you get to graduate school,\u201d Pastore commented.<br \/>\n\u201cIf I did it all over again, I would still go to pharmacy school.\u00a0 I think I got a fantastic education, and I think the College of Pharmacy has a lot to offer.\u201d<br \/>\nMoreover, Pastore sees pharmacists as leaders in the broadening of the philosophy behind healthcare in America.\u00a0 \u201cAs many healthcare professionals have acknowledged, we don\u2019t have a healthcare system\u2014we have a disease management system.\u00a0 We take care of people\u2019s diseases, but we should also be promoting healthy living.\u00a0 This is a tall order for pharmacists in particular, who counsel patients as some of the most trusted professionals in the industry.\u201d<br \/>\nPastore\u2019s philosophy is reflected in her daily approach of her work.\u00a0 \u201cI like interacting with patients.\u00a0 Aside from being able to take care of them as a medical professional, I like to talk to them and ask about their lives.\u00a0 You learn from people.\u201d<br \/>\nAway from the office, Pastore is a devoted mother of three.\u00a0 Her two daughters, Elena (12) and Christina (9,) enjoy dance and piano, while Peter (4) enjoys playing soccer.\u00a0 On the weekends, she enjoys heading to Narragansett with her children.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s my favorite part of the state, and the kids like the water.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>Chad Lamoureux, Pharmacy Student, Class of 2015<\/strong>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"chunk\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: right\"><strong>Newsletter Article &#8211;
