{"id":28966,"date":"2018-01-23T19:04:44","date_gmt":"2018-01-23T19:04:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/?p=28966"},"modified":"2019-01-10T15:20:01","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T20:20:01","slug":"executive-director-of-uris-ryan-institute-receives-prestigious-honor-from-national-science-peers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/2018\/01\/23\/executive-director-of-uris-ryan-institute-receives-prestigious-honor-from-national-science-peers\/","title":{"rendered":"Executive Director of URI\u2019s Ryan Institute receives prestigious honor from national science peers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Paula Grammas named fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science<\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28969\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28969\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1223\/Grammas.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[28966]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28969 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1223\/Grammas-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Paula Grammas\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28969\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paula Grammas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Paula Grammas, executive director of the University of Rhode Island\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ryaninstitute.uri.edu\/\">George &amp; Anne Ryan Institute for Neuroscience<\/a> and a College of Pharmacy professor, has been elected a Fellow of the&nbsp;American Association for the Advancement of Science in recognition of her pioneering research into neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>Grammas is part of a prestigious group of scientists, including five Nobel Laureates, selected as 2017 Fellows for \u201ctheir contributions to science and technology, scientific leadership and extraordinary achievements across disciplines.\u201d She is being recognized \u201cfor services to neuroscience, particularly in developing a novel approach to understanding the pathology of Alzheimer\u2019s disease and explaining research to the community,\u201d according to the award letter from Rush D. Holt, chief executive officer and executive publisher of the Association\u2019s publication, \u201cScience.\u201d Grammas is best known for her research into the role that blood vessels and inflammation play in the development of neurodegenerative diseases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am honored to be recognized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/news\/2017-aaas-fellows-recognized-advancing-science\">American Association for the Advancement of Science<\/a>, which has been a force for good in supporting the work of scientists and fostering innovation and collaboration among scientists, engineers and educators around the globe,\u201d Grammas said. \u201cThis acknowledgement is particularly meaningful coming from my peers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1848, the Association is the world\u2019s largest multidisciplinary scientific society. Past Fellows include inventor Thomas Edison, anthropologist Margaret Mead and astronomer Maria Mitchell.<\/p>\n<p>A former professor of neurology and holder of the Mildred and Shirley Garrison Chair in Aging at the Texas Tech School of Medicine, Grammas has received numerous awards for her research. She has been the principal investigator or co-investigator on more than $26 million in research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Alzheimer\u2019s Association, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, and other agencies and foundations.<\/p>\n<p>She has published more than 143 peer-reviewed research papers and is the recipient of the Zenith Award from the Alzheimer\u2019s Association in recognition of her accomplishments as one of the nation\u2019s leading researchers on Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>Grammas served as director of the University of Oklahoma\u2019s Center for Neuroscience and held the Presbyterian Health Foundation Endowed Chair in Neuroscience at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
