Detailed Course Description<\/h3>\n

This course will be taught for the first time in spring 2010 and will focus on cardiovascular diseases.   Renal diseases may be incorporated in future offerings.   We are excited to offer this class, as there are many concepts and applications for management of cardiovascular disease that cannot be explored within the required curriculum.  Students should be aware that this course is intended to build on the material from PHP 332 and PHP\/BPS 310.<\/p>\n

Didactic lectures<\/strong>
\nLectures will be interactive and cover areas such as integrative\/alternative medicine for cardiovascular disease (CVD), incremental benefit of new cardiovascular therapies, the electrocardiogram and other basic measures of function, the use of devices for non-pharmacologic management of CVD, and end of life decisions for patients with CVD.<\/p>\n

Case-Based Learning
\n<\/strong> This course will use many patient cases in order to facilitate understanding and promote complex decision-making.<\/p>\n

Student Participation<\/strong>
\nActive participation in class is a major component of this course. All students are expected to be fully prepared prior to class.<\/p>\n

Examination\/Final Project<\/strong>
\n<\/span> Two case-based written examinations will be given during the semester.  In addition, a final project\/presentation will serve as the third exam., Exams will cover lecture material noted in syllabus. Exam questions will be taken from material presented in class and from the assigned readings. Each student is responsible to attend each examination.<\/p>\n
